Agreed: if you can watch it, you can save it. Also, as a point of interest: Last I checked, Netflix (Silverlight based streaming) serves up its videos in a series of tiny chunks (you can look at this with e.g. Safari's Activity window). I d

I simply don't understand how Dawkins can give a real life example of a person very successfully keeping his beliefs totally separate from his related work and still say that we should care what that person believes. If being an "hone

To be fair, they of course were right. There are unique aesthetic values in silent film, and adding dialogue does do away with them (otherwise they wouldn't be unique values). They simply discovered that people consider it a worthwhile trad

Many of the cues you're referring to are already present in 3d and 2d movies. They're things like focus, texture, "what's covering what", how quickly something moves relative to the viewer, etc.

The top rated answer has a couple of interesting techniques to get around this problem. Also, not everyone has a Gmail account. I'm sure virtually everyone on HN does, but some of us also wind up making websites for people who are less savv

Am I the only one who was really hoping for some specifics about what they're doing and plan to do about content farm rankings? Without that, the article is virtually devoid of content other than "we're really not so bad!" Edit: By specific

Agreed. It seems like it may just be a PR move... Larry doesn't have Eric's growing reputation for slight creepiness. People might like the idea (whether it's true or not) that he's the one making all the calls.

Sounds pretty similar to the network "Up next" ads that run along the bottom everytime a show cuts back from commercial or is about to end. The difference would be that you are "already watching TV", in the same sense that Google had you "a

Disappointed to see Twitter among the most popular apps. For mobile devices the native-app-front-end-for-existing-websites was arguably necessary and beneficial, but for desktop clients it really feels like a big step back to start moving b

Not to take away from the brilliance of this, but is it actually a good idea to encourage people to pee as hard as possible each time they use the restroom?

I don't know that it's anything to worry about. When you throw a bunch of analytical people into a rating system, it's only natural that they'll be searching out its weak points. A lot of us have probably noticed various weaknesses in the k

Here's what I would like to say about this issue of a font being for a purpose: Yes, most of the examples presented on this site are heinous and tremendously bad typeface choices. But that has nothing to do with the fact that comic sans was

While I was able to follow the Aaronson article with no particular trouble, I can't seem to grok this. I'd be very grateful to anyone who could give a slightly lower level explanation.

Thanks for the info. Perhaps I just got better about writing clean markup around the same time I started using XHTML, and confused the two. I suppose now's as good a time as any for me to embrace HTML5.

"But it's almost 2011, who’s still using XHTML anyway?" This caught me totally off guard. My experience has been that XHTML is much easier to manage across browsers than HTML 4. Can anyone chime in as to whether I'm crazy?

CSS letter-spacing is under-utilized on the web. Obviously I'm not suggesting it be used for body text, but elsewhere it's a very easy way to make your design stand out online and give the feeling that a print-design level of attention to d

The point of the article is to argue that all sites like this (HN, Reddit) will devolve into 4chan. The fact that it has a large user base does not make up for the fact that it's full of banal memes, porn, racism, and idiocy.
