It's "don't be evil", not "do no evil". Also, I hate to be mean, but evidence and logical argument are completely absent from the blog post.

The solstice is unremarkable, or the coincidence is? I would think the shortest day of the year is relatively noteworthy to other species, even if they can't detect the specific date; certainly more interesting than a lunar eclipse (I'd as

I seem to recall reading that at least in Atlantic City, casinos are required to have an entirely separate set (or maybe even 2 other sets) of high-value checks, that can be swapped in case of suspected counterfeiting. I would assume that

"Labour used to be much cheaper." - with 10% unemployment in the US (that's higher if you use more accurate measures), I'm not quite sure why the reason for this would be a lack of available labor.

"Learnings"? Seriously? And the summary of the points seems to be "Work all the time and send lots of spam". And apparently foursquare cost millions of dollars to start.

Considering that most of these studies are by people with an interest in getting a certain result, it's likely experimental errors/not publishing some results will bias the published numbers in a certain direction. The scientific method has

I was giving my neighbors tech support for their computer when I was 2 and a half. Is that because of all the pre-natal time I spend in front of an Apple IIe? Just because this guy doesn't think he has a talent doesn't mean that nobody doe

I think Heroku's pricing contains both the RAM and CPU cost for the instances. The Google price only includes the RAM cost of the servers, the CPU is still charged per request.

A few of these points are just ridiculous: 1) If you want "SQL and Joins", use SQL. This is like complaining that you can't play Halo on Linux. 1A) There isn't full text search. If you need full text search, use a system with full text se

Well, with their diet requirements that's not really a huge surprise. They seem ridiculously overconstrained. "The ideal diet requires meeting four of five key components based on a 2,000-calories-a-day meal plan: 4 1/2 cups of fruits and

Facebook has never been good at explaining their products. Remember "Once every 100 years media changes"? That doesn't mean their products don't work. I've never had the impression that Facebook was overflowing with incredible technical

I guess the solution is more to combat computational finance, but if there is time for prices everywhere to propagate between trades, the opportunities for geographical arbitrage diminish greatly. I think it's a bug in the system that this

IMO, the obvious solution to this madness is to quantize stock trades; i.e. to only allow stock prices to change once every 10 seconds. As long as transactions weren't announced until the end of the period, there wouldn't be any benefit fro

I thought of it as more of a parody, almost; things that were major plot points only because they were hidden from the reader are presented up front (Harry's invisibility cloak being special, or the time turner, or the DADA instructor curse

I think the most important point that the article leaves out is that 99% of people don't want to put in those 10000 hours anyhow. Most people can get really good at most things if they really want it enough. That said, it's ridiculous to s

It's amazing how the "deliberate ambiguity" policy that seems to surround most border disputes breaks down when there are online maps that most people tend to accept. Even saying areas are disputed tends to cause outrage.

From a quick test, the search engine is pretty bland and unexciting for normal queries, but it motivates you to make different types of queries, where it does have interesting results. For instance, just searching for "china" isn't anything
