I've tried both Puppet and Chef. Puppet fits my mental model more, but I had for more success with actually getting Chef up and running. Puppet, on the surface, has less 'messing about' to do in order to get things running - but my experien

Same - if they're intentionally violating the spec then I'd really love to know why. I suspect this is just something that wasn't caught by testing / QA before release.

Small team working on fairly big systems - we rarely have any merge conflicts due to the way we divide work up. They can be a pain in the arse when something has gone wrong though - but it's not really something we spend a lot of time worry

A lot of JS tends to be required when you're building a big, dynamic web application, or your website needs lots of modules and lovely little widgets. If you can avoid writing a lot of JS, then that's great - but HTML / CSS alone can't prov

TL;DR - This was originally a reply to another commenter. There seems to be a lot of people accusing Backbone of failing to provide things that it has never claimed to provide. This is a bit of a rant so apologies in advance! Obviously YMMV

I've recently become a bit of a fan of Backbone, and have been tying it with Vertx and SockJS. It makes my fingers tingly.

Apps don't GET finished without some kind of development approach / philosophy. 'I don't give a shit about maintainability' is a philosophy. It's just a really, really, bad one.

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out - but I can't see it being widely adopted in the home any time soon. People who want gesture based stuff will use Kinect. However, I can see this being huge in the commercial market. I can easil

The author ( me :P ) mentions that using a.equals(b) is the correct solution right at the beginning of the post. Unfortunately this problem will continue to occur as long as autoboxing exists, so I think it's a valid idea to simply enforce

Finding bugs: I'm a big believer in Linus' law - which basically says that the more people look at your code, the more likely you are to identify bugs. In my experience, the single best way to identify bugs and other problems is to have a g

Although languages like Python are arguably 'easier' to learn than others, I think there is actually a strong argument for beginners to learn more classic languages first: 1: More established languages tend to have far more documentation, t

If somebody did this for me, I'd immediately think of it as slimy and basically 'suck-up' behaviour. I would value people honoring their subordinates or customers. So long as they're not assholes to their superiors, I don't care about brown

I fail to see how these 'requirements' are in the scope of HTML. This guy just doesn't understand it, imho. Nothing is stopping them from hiring a developer to figure out a way of incorporating an ad system.

I agree absolutely with this. A bad hiring process is responsible for so many problems that companies have. Lots of places which 'require' <insert trendy language / framework> experience hire someone who ends up being in way over th

I would say that a truly great programmer isn't necessarily technically amazing. For example, a vast knowledge of programming languages is something that anyone can learn with enough time and patience. However, it's the ability to problem s
