I firmly believe people are deluding themselves if they think that without US patronage, Europe wouldn't devolve into its historical norm, a state of internal warfare. The popular narrative suggests a 'United States of Europe'

Instead of viewing the current world order as collapsing, it's more accurate to see this as a transitional period. The system established after WWII no longer serves the interests of its main creator, the US, making change inevitable.

As in so many of these stories, what gets glossed over is just how much complexity there is in setting up your own server securely. You set up your server. Harden it. Follow all the best practices for your firewall with ufw. Then you run a

I think you are confusing "getting a stroke" and "dying from stroke". If you get a heart attack and don't die from it you might become a burden on your family too.

Nuclear non-proliferation only really works when no one feels the need for nuclear weapons in the first place. As soon as countries start feeling threatened or distrust each other, the whole idea falls apart. It’s easy to agree on disarmame

Don’t think of it as one side against the other. It’s a dialectical process, two extremes, like communists and fascists, seemingly locked in mortal opposition, yet through their struggle, pushing the same totalitarian machinery forward. Tha

Not really, because this time it's not machine to do something that people used to do, but a machine to do anything and everything that people used to do.

This won’t happen until the immigration issue is resolved one way or another. The moment you introduce an unconditional $1,500 per citizen, the question of who qualifies as a citizen will become even more divisive than it already is. EDIT:

I’m trying to figure out why this feels so unsettling to me. I can understand wanting to end one’s life because of unbearable pain or illness, but something about this just feels wrong.

This isn't an "everyone who struggles to finish projects or is a perfectionist has it" kind of post, but if this has been a long-term pattern for you, one that's caused real suffering, lost jobs or contracts, or kept you

The funny thing is, both sides can read your comment and assume you’re talking about the other side having the "wrong" opinion. It’s the kind of platitude that doesn’t really add anything, it just signals that you see yourself as

This is the kind of story that perfectly captures why “open source” != “freedom.” You can run 100% FOSS software and still be completely imprisoned if you give control to a middleman. The company in this story didn’t just sell “support”, th

The most cynical part is that Labour spent years accusing the Tories of wanting to do this, then introduced it themselves, dressed up as a way to cut migration. And now, if you oppose the ID, they smear you as being pro–illegal immigration.

Have any of those petitions ever changed anything? I might as well shout 'I don’t want a digital ID' down the toilet, it’d be just as effective. And that’s coming from someone who’s against digital IDs.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with e-ID, it can be mighty useful, especially when implemented thoughtfully. The real problem is when it’s imposed despite widespread societal opposition and refusal (which obviously is not the issue here,
