Markdown sounds right. I don't see open protocols being published in print though. Especially not if they're collaboratively edited in any way.

One problem you might face is that there are already more than a few wikis for this. For the last few experiments I've run, I used sites like these. That said, you could easily distinguish yourselves. A website that could recalculate concen

I disagree. Computer science is supposed to be a "pure" field, like mathematics. It is not meant to teach any specific technology, language, library, development model, etc. You can (and should) pick that up on your own. These things change

Agreed. In the end we merely moved around atoms and electrons within chemical space. Applying labels to things which are simply transient configurations and then invoking "deep philosophical ponderings" concerning the new identity of these

Please elaborate. I'm not very informed about this kind of issue. Can you suggest any reading I could do?

Go to Southern Poly, just up the road in Marietta. You'll be able to transfer in about a year AND have the Hope scholarship.

I'm a computational molecular biologist, and I don't understand the cell or the brain. Nobody does. What's holding us back? The proteome, interactome, connectome, etc. etc. You'll see biologically-inspired AI after we solve a MUCH simpler s

I don't entirely disagree, but what components are the ones we can simplify? Send a computer back in time and ask the people there what causes a paricular bug: without a very detailed model (which imparts the ability to know what things you

Don't be fooled by approaches like this. HTM is an oversimplification that doesn't bring us any closer to real machine intelligence. I read the book a few years back when I was taking courses in machine learning and metaheuristics, and I re

If we were to use yeast, we could additionally include methylation. We don't have to stop there: we could encode information in histone acetylation states, transcription levels, etc. to increase this density even further. Granted, how pract

You should care about your DNA! It isn't just a blueprint, but a computational device that stores an insane amount of state information. In fact, the internal state of your cells as an aggregate (genome/proteome, concentration/expression le

I definitely agree with this. Besides, the code itself is an insignificant part of the process. Any paper will include more than enough evidence to back up its assertions and provide a path for duplicating its results.

This isn't something new at all! Chemists have been using computers extensively since the 70's, and this can be evidenced by the fact that several physical chemists at my university still use Fortran. Computers have been used in science fro

I've never heard them called "mRNA polymerases." RNA polymerase should do just fine. In fact, wouldn't helicase do better?

A really ineresting way to look at aging is this: if longer life was evolutionarily advantageous, we would have evolved additional molecular mechanisms to support it. It's not that by dying earlier we keep the gene pool fitter, because that

Graph theory is applicable for exploring biochemical pathways, and all manner of statistics, ML, and metaheuristics are useful. We can't "code" an organism, unfortunately. That won't be possible for some time. Venter has inserted a bacteria

What spin do you refer to? Shouldn't society be able to benefit from a novel cell line, regardless of the origin? If it were you or me, wouldn't we gladly donate the knowledge and utility of our cells if they can serve mankind? So what if w

How does taking a genetic sample turn someone into a lab rat? Once you have samples they get frozen at -80 indefinitely. There are not too many people on this earth yet either. My guess is that your analysis is coming from the wrong places.

I'm studying to become an interdiciplinary computational biochemist, so perhaps I can lend some perspective. Supercomputers are increasingly used in the sciences to scale down the search space of massively complicated problems such as prote

It's rather difficult to find developer interest for new open source projects. Sourceforge, etc, have no real means of high-volume social networking. Besides, I'd really like to find someone from HN that is interested in my area of research

@mkice: Please email me (echelon@gmail.com). I've got a massive engineering project that I've been working on for some years, and I definitely need help on it due to my busy education schedule. It's along the same lines of Diaspora, but a m
