It’s a privilege with most externalities _not_ taken into account, i.e. it’s hurting us all because we ignore its true cost and make it available in vast quantities. Since the global South will suffer the most from climate change, they migh

Dumb question but if the all-wing design has major advantages (and basically no negatives?), why haven't we been pursuing this for a long time? You’re telling me that just recently a random startup thought they’d work on it? It’s not e

Random allocation of citizens to seats might actually make for a better government. We could try that one, since the MBAs-and-lawyers clique with money/influence have been doing a poor job lately.

I wonder if the harness itself is not token-efficient? It would be fairer to compare K3 using the same generic harness, such as a Pi setup with some sane extensions for token optimisation.

Others have pointed out enough issues such as ethical sourcing, but here’s 2 more: 1) It’s hard to be excited about something that has been promised to destroy your job. 2) New models come out bi-weekly with even more “amazing features”. Ev

This is one of the shittiest comment sections I’ve seen on Hackernews all year. It’s prime-rib astroturfing or bots spamming “excited to use this/see the workflows”. We should flag this and lock it down. Angellist doesn’t have to resor

Yeah, I can 100% understand your frustration. It’s also a bit opaque as to why it’s re-encoding. That said, we are a family so I can’t get everyone else to stream to mpv, so Jellyfin works better for everyone. mpv is also a great piece of

Back-of-the-napkin math supports that, but baby births aren’t uniformly distributed. Well, anyway, I’m sure they thought about it. Thanks for explaining how I got my Belgian ID number!

Setting HW-encoding is a tad complicated indeed, it’s hard to debug WHY it’s not working. But once you have it, you’re good. Jellyfin has been rock solid for us in 2 years since we ditched Netflix and Prime Video.

You can check why it’s re-encoding, there’s some guides out there. In my case it was the subtitles! Turns out Safari can’t handle all types of subtitles. Might be worth looking into it.

Is the modern non-Catholic school system somehow expensive or ineffective? I fail to understand this take. Education also got vastly more complex, we teach kids a bunch of new stuff.

Yes, Things Get Better Over Time, that’s also not a new phenomenon. Even if you don’t compare against a well-off previous generation, there are 2 issues: 1) Not enough young people can contribute to make social security payments to the elde

My counterpoint is that if you’re always listening to the same stuff, your collection feels stale and you’re less likely to listen to more music. Maybe that’s actually advantageous to the streaming services, but one big reason I cancelled t

Hmm, with unmetered traffic? I played DarkGalaxy one month at home and we got a ~95€ bill, my dad wasn’t amused. Literally just DG’s website once a day.

Thank you. The rest of the file is much more serious. I’ve now instructed Clod to consider passing TypeScript compilation and linting successes as “suspicious glitches”.

It’s true I didn’t grow up with that at all. When music blog were popular I’d have been in university exclusively listening to what I already liked. Bandcamp is indeed really bad at suggesting things you’ll like… To your last point: it’s we

If only they had gobs of cash to pay people to curate content… or, I don’t know, AI that can check if something is AI. Or ask uploaders for some kind of proof, since we’re in the age of asking citizens to prove they’re adults. If only there

Yeah, GP is rose-tinting piracy and Apple’s stance a bit… When I was a teenager we had _dial-up_. My first 2 iPods were strictly playing ripped CDs, which I, friends, or family had bought. Buying the iPod itself was probably cheaper than 2

Okay, a bit of devil’s advocate but how much of that network effect was caused by being young? I’m making an assumption, true, but a lot of us that grew up with ripped CDs were teenagers or young adults back then. Sharing music was inherent

Eh, I was prescribed 2mg of slow-release melatonin to help with insomnia (baby-related). Man, were these the worst nights of my life! I’d get 2-3 hours of shut-eye and then be FULLY awake. Ready to go, couldn’t sleep the rest of the night.

I agree with you, but after the 14th load-bearing thing in a day, it does get a bit tiresome; especially since words have meaning. I’d expect OpenSSL to be load-bearing; but no, that one-line function isn’t load-bearing. It might be importa

Bruce Schneier goes on about this A LOT, and you’re exactly on point. If the knowledgeable tech people don’t get into policy, it will become law drafted by lawyers and MBAs. Man, I wish I knew how to get into policy…
