> Why isn't it possible to represent a program visually? I'd argue that the visual representation necessarily needs to abstract from the actual code to be useful. From concrete to abstract you can choose from any number of nota

You might like Harold McGee's "On Food and Cooking" which is basically a popular science food chemistry "textbook" (it doesn't really go in the chemistry details but it usually gives you some pointers). It'

Instead of a decimal place I like to use the next smaller unit, i.e. 1 day 2 hours ago 1 year 10 months ago 2 weeks 3 days ago As a user "1.9 years" would have me scratching my head a bit.

Google Maps used to be really bad in my then neighborhood which had roads and garages underground and bike lanes and footpaths on the ground level. For the longest time they didn't even have the numbers of individual houses and treated

The comment you're replying to refers to the fact that the usual proposal is a leading comma You're right that it's not valid Haskell but that wasn't the goal here.

pg_dump [0] (or pg_dumpall, linked there) sounds like what you want to use. You could docker exec into the postgres container, then copy the dump from the volume to your backup location on the host. A bit more contrived than copying the vol

I agree with you - this is a "law hack" and should be seen as a good thing. It shows a loophole in the system and directs attention towards it so that it can be fixed. There's no system like responsible disclosure in law.

The regulation incentivizes one to actually use the property instead of parking one's money there, so I think it's working as intended. In order to avoid squatting, put the property to use or hire a security company. Don't ex

You might like to check out the cheaper end supermarkets, you can get 1kg potatos for 0.60ct at my local Kaufland (when they're discounted). Just get enough so they last until the next discount. Normally they're around 1.00€.

You're in for a nasty surprise if (for whatever reason) this code is executed using Python 2: https://docs.python.org/2/library/functions.html#input Equivalent to eval(raw_input(prompt)).

I get your sentiment and agree that we're horribly over-regulated in a lot of ways but that's a misconception about the Arbeitszeitgesetz. 1) §3 restricts working time to an average of 8 hours per Werktag (~business day?), i

Yea, it seems weird to me that they decided to do that in ECMAScript in the first place. The user/programmer should never have to interface with surrogates unless they are doing something specific to UTF-16.

Right! In practice you'd just put the symbols directly. Funnily enough {"text": "\ud83e\udd14"} is the only way to encode the JSON from my post on HN :D

The biggest takeaway/shock for me in this article is the fact that JSON string literals can't contain escaped characters outside the Basic Multilingual Plane (i.e. whose code points are greater than U+FFFF). Quoting RFC 8259:
