Could an internationally-distributed, loosely-affiliated group of people use this to orchestrate tipping an election for some quid pro quo without leaving a paper trail? Asking for a friend.

The choice of opting out only exists where competition exists. Without a government to keep corporations in check, your ability to opt out would evaporate.

...we would not have the modular desktop PC and we would not have Linux. There’s probably no way to support that counter-factual. We could easily have ended up with some other open-architecture personal computer and open source operating

It could be that they are just trying to improve their negotiating position. Even if that's true, I'd wager that it is just the short-term contingency of an investment with a long-term view. I bet they have their eye on the end-

But, most countries have no trouble organizing that kind of sacrifice. Ouch, that hurts. Kick us while we’re down.

Type systems are applied mathematics. You can’t get more engineering-y than that.

There are software engineering methods that are proven to work. Rust’s type system is arguably one of them.

The ML model might know more about me than I’m willing to admit about myself. I only find some — but not much — comfort in the proposition that it can’t conjure my PII.

The OCEAN model mentioned by the CA exec (Nix) was originally based on factor analysis, not ML. The key criticism of factor analysis is just that one can’t infer causality, but in an application like this no one cares about causation — only

Which number is it that you’re taking to be arbitrary? I would expect that the product of two non-arbitrary numbers to be non-arbitrary. (Although I think tau might be a small improvement upon pi.)

Of those many possibilities, Carl Sagan chose the product of pi times the hydrogen spin-flip transition frequency, for use in his novel Contact. In fact, several SETI scientists in Australia had independently arrived at that same target fr

It's nice that Rust has a macro facility to make this possible. It reminds me of the delightful way that Google Web Toolkit lightly abused the "native" keyword (which marks FFI methods in Java) to do inline javascript.
