Hello, author here, happy to answer questions and discuss! This is the first in more Guix articles coming from me, as I started when building my newest desktop [0]. Next will be more details on exactly how my system is set up, but you can f

Been around long enough, but I guess managed to dodge it mostly (or usually see links that go through some intermediary?) and not really mind, to be honest :)

Love Common Lisp and found this helpful even after using it for several years (coincidentally I was just reading it before it popped up here again). I'm intrigued by Sly, as a long time Slime user, will have to try it out! I was also j

Should have a (2020) tag, though Common Lisp has a standard, these optimizations are done by specific implementations (compilers).

Newer Ryzens can get plenty hot, and by design, e.g. https://www.pcgamer.com/amd-views-ryzen-5000-cpu-temperature... In my experience with a 5600X and water cooling (nothing crazy, just an off the shelf AIO) sustained full

Good points, and I didn't mean to say that there isn't some placebo/nocebo effect. There's lots of evidence for the connection between mind and body, so it certainly seems plausible this happens (also not a medical exper

While I always thought placebo (and nocebo) is quite amazing, I've had that tempered from some reading of it perhaps not being a large effect beyond a regression to the mean. For example, here's one paper [0], with a quote from th

Interesting data and analysis to see (who hasn't wondered if there's a "best" time to post?) though I fail to see what that would have to do with any actual product. Sure, HN can give you a ton of views, but it is a pret

Very nice, I like it! And as a frequent cyclist and writing instructor, really appreciate this kind of work on many levels. Good to see NLP towards social good like this.

Looks helpful, covering a lot of bases. One thing that seems to be missing is making sure to handle .pacnew files (changes to default configuration files). I'm always bad at this, but is much easier with a good tool like pacfiles-mode

I've recently switched (from Arch) to Guix for my new desktop. Works great, though does require some work (I enjoy the tinkering). Depends on what you want of course, and needs you have especially in the non-free or things like JS (Gui

While I partially agree with there being a difference between just ads and what we're seeing happen, I didn't read it as being a 1-to-1 correspondence. Instead, it was pointing out the perhaps limited influence of...influence. In

Thanks for sharing this, found it a very interesting read and analysis of FB and disinformation/advertising. One clue should definitely be that "if we just fix FB the problem will be solved or substantially better" can't

Japan's internet infrastructure, at least in Tokyo where I lived for a bit, is amazing. Most buildings were wired up with fiber (this is ~2011) with 100 Mbps up/down pretty standard and cheap (~$30/month at the time I think).

Thanks, I'll be sure to post on HN when it is done. Guix is still pretty new, but there's also Nix in a similar space (but not Scheme). And it has certainly been a learning experience, in a very good sense!

No worries! I haven't built something with so many fans before, but it looked empty without them so I went all in. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure some of them (like the bottom ones) ramp up as needed, since they will go o
