As far as the buckets go, I still believe there is a pretty large spectrum. BSD vs GPL vs LGPL are pretty dramatically different, and there are many in-between that might satisfy the definition of “open-source” at face value.

BSD would not be OSS by this definition, as it has no clause against discrimination of people. OSS is IMO a very subjective term. There is a massive gray area surrounding open-sourcing derivative works, etc. and other stipulations.

You’re not wrong, but I also believe that a lot of these problems are inherently complicated. Trying to encapsulate all the cases for a given problem will inherently have edge cases. Yes they suck and yes we should try to prevent them when

I love that they’re doing this. However, in my use-case I keep a laptop 5+ years now. At that point, it’s pretty worn out and usually warrants a total replacement. All the individual components keep me happy for so darn long now. After 5+ y

“Open source” tends to be a spectrum. For example, many consider GPL to be a great OSS license, but it’s restrictive enough that some BSD projects try to avoid it.

The kind of vibration produced while strapped to a rocket motor is completely different that what iPhones normally experience. Most people underestimate how violent that environment can be.

I completely agree with this. Mil-spec and certified ICs are a completely different beast. As we can see, they have to survive decades in storage, need an absurdly high pass rate, need to survive incredible abuse in battlefield situations A

Yes - it’s much like now weather forecasting works. Data points may come from 2 places 100 mi apart, but what if someone lives between them? Temperature or other weather data is often an extrapolation based on official weather data collecti

I don’t play anymore, but I’m a little sad it had that reputation. The game was so much more than then, and had (has?) brilliant PvP. It really was one of the games that did a great job of providing a real sandbox. Spreadsheets were just pa

I totally agree. I don't think there would be a push for NACS from other automakers if it isn't better, royalty free, and completely open. I have Starlink as well - over promised, and under delivered _but_ it currently still has n

Not that you’re wrong about self driving, but they have been light years ahead of the competition in other areas. I don’t think it’s fair to say that have “missed some deadlines” and generalize to this, when they’ve been a major contributor

That’s my understanding as well. It’s forcing farmers to think about water as a sustainable resource rather than depleting the aquifers completely.

Conceptually I understand this. In order to be codified, I think the legal system needs to come up with clear and accepted differentiation between the two.

Ok, just playing devil's advocate here. How many FAANG companies have you seen have an outage this year? What's their budget? I think a better way to reply to the author would have been "how often does it fail"? Every sy

I think there’s also a shift in which rural areas people are living in. For example, not as many people are needed to farm, but many rural areas are attractive to new remote workers. The areas don’t necessarily overlap. My hometown farm c

This is one reason I like serverless. It works for a bunch of cases when you can wrap your head around it, and cost can scale linearly with your growth. At some point, it might make sense to move off for cost reductions, but tools like GCP

I’m not sure why you got downvoted. Apple is a trillion dollar company. They certainly have looked into this, and many of the leaks supported this theory.
