I don't think that any of the news-oriented default Windows application since W8 had an option to provide a custom RSS channel. It was always a default pool of sources they were bringing.

Nah, not anymore - Linux is usable for ordinary daily tasks for more than 10 years now. And even gaming is in good shape thanks to Proton - that is, unless you have some particular choices which are known to not work.

What should be also bring back is the selective choice for installing updates. That would allow users again avoiding patches which have been confirmed as dangerous to the system stability. Pausing, postponing isn't a solution here.
