If you think that's confusing, I had two professors in grad school who were married and shared the same last name. She had a PhD when I started there, so I called her "Doctor," but he didn't, so I called him "Steve

Interesting. So, basically, it sounds like you had some dial-out modems hooked up, and some kind of database of other BBS numbers, kind of like a routing table, except you basically offloaded the actual routing to the phone company? Then,

Sure, it's kind of absurd that the same 4 people would be at the center of so many technological shifts, over a period of 20+ years. But, you really have to accept that as a conceit of the medium. There are basically only two ways to

I don’t think you do, given how I’ve broken it down to below ELI5 levels, and you’re still snarking at me, but, ok. Additionally, you are quite wrong. I distinctly recall the first time I was ever literally moved to tears by music, and it

Nope. I’ve got one of the old, mechanical thermostats with an analog dial and a bimetallic strip that completes a circuit to run the heater. My apartment building is about 50 years old, and I’m pretty sure it’s still the original equipment.

I think those are both referring to the fact that without some very sophisticated manufacturing processes and equipment, it's not possible to build an 8086 to begin with. Once we're at a point of societal collapse, we would, pres

I'm looking around at all my home "machinery," and I don't see anything essential that is computer controlled. I have an ordinary gas furnace heating it; a plain old gas stove for cooking; a refrigerator that's g

Huh, really. I haven't gotten around to watching American Gods , and Westworld isn't my thing, but I also enjoyed the title sequence for The Man in the High Castle . It isn't one of the ones I'd watch every time, j

I don't really find that a very compelling criticism, to be honest. When I think about what kind of features I'd want in my messaging app, there are really only two things I can think of that iMessage doesn't have: encryptio

I found it fairly believable, if not completely accurate, in both aspects. Most of the things in the show are things that actually happened in real life, just with the serial numbers filed off. For instance, Cardiff Electric is basically

Speaking of music, while this show has so many amazing things going for it, one of the best is the intro sequence and the theme music. That puts it on rare footing with shows like Mad Men and Covert Affairs . I know Netflix puts this b

That assumes that goods and services are getting cheaper, which isn't the case for several key necessities. In particular, housing, education, and medical care have risen far faster than inflation for the past 40+ years.

Even in Python 2, you can do something like this: println = lambda s: sys.stdout.write(s + '\n') Not that it really makes things much better, but, at least it shows you can do it.
