Nothing to do with mothers, wasn't it something to do with visiting your "mother church", the church where you were baptised?

That certainly used to be the case. Do you think that in 2026 maybe rapid progress can also come from using the same primitives faster? I'm still figuring this out but I'm certainly open to the possibility.

Awesome AI startup idea. There's a camera in the glasses and a motor in the mouse. It watches your screen and moves the mouse to click on the right things at the right times. What are we doing about the keyboard though? Are we putting

I really used to think this. Those old incumbents, I used to think. Such slow old dinosaurs! A crack team of just me and a few friends could eat their lunch for sure, and soon they'll be gone. And yet, here we are. Of course, some thin

I agree with everything you've said, but don't you think quite a lot of things have also been like this before, just to a lesser degree? I've often had the sense that most of what is done inside companies is a kind of perform

Your car isn't 'effectively free', because you could sacrifice all £20k into the pension, paying no tax on it, and get the £12k in childcare subsidies because your income is <=£100k. The EV is costing you £7000 pa out of t

An incredibly prescient parable for the modern information overload age, if so. Do you recall the title? I'd love to give it a read. Asimov was a master.

I don't even know what to make of this comment! Because I have a different view from you I must not be a person? Not the sort of debate I'm used to on HN.

Oh I see. So yes, for pedestrians standing nearby when you start up. That probably represents 0.01% of the people I encounter on my drives. The other 99.99% don't notice.

Yes mine was used. Battery is fine. Of course I made sure to buy one with a suitable range for my needs. There's lots of options.

My insurance went down not up when I switched. EV servicing is cheaper and I do it less often. I bought used. The monthly depreciation is less than my previous fuel bill. YMMV.

Yes. It's a good idea, therefore should not need lots of lies, indeed lots of lies aren't told, and so the idea should just catch on of its own strength? But it doesn't seem to and I'm identifying that as due to inertia.

I'm not sure. Don't underestimate the power of inertia. I bought an EV last year and it's definitely been a "good idea" for me. Luxurious ride, fuel costs a tenth, doesn't stink. Seems such an obvious upgrade i

Sometimes the elements in the `Avoid patterns like:` list are quoted text it should avoid, sometimes they're just descriptions of things to avoid. But they are "quoted" in both cases which is a bit confusing. Maybe not to an

I don't think either of us disagree though that the number of miles of non-leisure journeys walked per capita is significantly less in 2026 than it was in 1926 or 1826 though? I always found it pretty remarkable in David Copperfield wh

I mean it is true to say that most people in the West now use a car for transport, and walking has become more of a leisure pursuit (rebranded as "hiking") rather than a practical necessity.
