Pycharm and visual studio have free editions. Vim, emacs, Atom, VS Code, sublime - there are many options.

Libraries. And to build them you need certain language features. 2 big ones: complex numbers and operator overloading. The lack of these meant that everyone doing simulation and data analysis skipped Java altogether.

Tried docker? It seems VMs are faster than the native OS in the MS case. Should have most of your needs as prepackaged images.

Regular python/C++ API is threaded (to some extent). Parts of the C++ API is GPU enabled. Simd - pretty sure, the library originated at Intel, after all.

Why not really? From the sqlite docs: Beginning with version 3.7.17 (2013-05-20), SQLite has the option of accessing disk content directly using memory-mapped I/O and the new xFetch() and xUnfetch() methods on sqlite3_io_methods.

The CLI/curses option "tig" can be handy once a year or so.

When git garbage collection runs, I do believe it collects dangling commits. Doing a "git branch backup" before doing something stupid gives you a more convenient "undo". Alternatively, just git clone to a new directory

We've tried using it, as have other peopke I know. There are serious limitations to it. In practice I'd call it vapourware. Sharelatex delivers. In a SW dev team, markdown/latex+git also works great.

Happy sharelatex user here. I'd say one of the essential advantages is rock solid simultaneous editing. I converted a couple of word users and they were instantly hooked. On a tight deadline, no less! Saved our ass in the end - the slo

Just a few gig in a directory at work. Gave up syncing it after spending several days alternating between crashing, eating 100% CPU, and popping up error messages. Yes 1 TB is nice but you can't get to it!

Dropbox + Libreoffice is similar, yes. Also dropbox is way faster, runs on linux, and easy to script against. Oh, and onedrive consistently crashes on my win 10. But yeah, feature-list-wise, onedrive isn't bad if you're a MS fanbo

Cool post! But I run ipython / jupyter console locally for such use cases. It's nicer than plain python IMHO. Tab completion, coloring etc.

Depends what you're doing I'd say. In physics based modeling, which is used more in e.g. engineering, line plots are often very useful. When examining noisy real world data, not so much.

Sharelatex has vim bindings that are quite good.

There's a significant point a lot of people are missing. In e.g. physics and chemistry, the math is not the point. Using e.g. Wolfram Alpha is great if it allows students to solve larger and more complex problems, without sitting there

Would be more important if the pound had an independent definition - suddenly, a lot of international trade and unit conversion apps are affected.

Personally, I have bad experience with tabs. Experience and salary are correlated. Also some languages are "tab friendly" and there are correlations between language and salary; see previous HN posts on the topic.

While "GHC is faster than CPython" is a fairly accurate generalization, I still think python performance is easier to reason about. Haskell can give you fast code, but sometimes it will be super slow for no obvious reason.

Disagree. A REPL does not make for a log of what you did - which is a big deal if you're revisiting/-running data analysis workflows you haven't touched in a long time.

Git bash comes with ssh. Cygwin has ssh as an optional install. Msys2 too. Of course, you need to have windows first. MS give away 30-day win 10 trial VM images with git bash installed, or at least they did.

I've heard a horror story of someone doing signal processing in node.js. It'd be nice to use a well tested Fortran FFT routine - there aren't many .js libs for doing numerics AFAIK (disclaimer: not a js programmer)
