Pacman is, subjectively, the fastest package manager I’ve ever used. Not sure if it’s C vs python though, apt is also much slower on many tasks.

In my experience, journals sometimes use old versions of packages, so you often don’t want to use the «modern way». Examples: lualatex is often not available, biblatex is not supported, etc

There is always Rpy for calling R functions from python, if you have to write your program in python but need a stats function from R. I guess python is always the choice if you’re writing software, although for interactive use YMMV.

The collaboration and sync tools are very useful, including performant editing by multiple authors at once.

This is a natural step that I’ve been waiting for for years. This can almost remove the need for password typing, as you don’t even need one to unlock the device anymore. Let’s hope Microsoft does the same, and integrates with apple’s solut

Can you use your API to perform the updates? Btw balena is a great service, good job!

Their server component is FOSS and you can self-host. You need to do a bit of extra config on the devices but it’s documented. Disclaimer: I’ve never tried it myself.

Take a look at balenaCloud if you want to deploy containers to IoT devices. (Disclaimer: happy customer). Their free tier is free forever, too.

some C libraries release the GIL before running CPU intensive computations. Examples include numpy and hashlib.

How do people use autoformatters in CI pipelines? I dislike the fact that precommit hooks have to be set up for each git clone. Is there a better way?

A nice thing with WSL is that you get working make and rsync. But I would like make for coding on native windows. Many FOSS projects use Makefile as the parent post described.

One of the worst problems with using windows (in my opinion) is that there’s no native GNU make.

Even if the missile is not destroyed, optical sensor systems must necessarily absorb some light, and will probably be destroyed. This is a possible tactic employed by less powerful lasers, too.

If you’re doing (data analysis|simulations|Image processing) you can offload computation to numpy, which releases the GIL. This allows nice multicore speedups with python and threading. The same holds for various CPU intensive standard libr

It’s a big difference, but the parent post indicated that partial installation was not possible at all. At least that was my understanding.

Both texlive and miktex allow selectively installing some packages only. AFAIK the difference is that miktex will show a popup saying «do you want to install foopackage?» when you try to compile a document which uses foopackage, and you don

True. I use vmware and my ubuntu vm is faster than my windows host. This makes hyper-v and docker on windows incompatible, though. I run i3 inside vmware. I would expect virtualbox to be ok too, for this use case.

I’ve compiled fortran code from approx 1965. Works the same today. I don’t know of anything that is as compatible as standard Fortran code. That being said, quite a few vendor extensions are floating around, and often old codebases rely on

I have small kids and have noticed that they can consistently screw up a task when you’re teaching them something. A few days later, they can suddenly do the task without thinking. I suspect learning happens partly after the fact, analogous

To me, subjectively, VMWare is much, much faster when it comes to GUI stuff. I suspect GPU virtualization plays a role there. I haven’t compared raw compute performance (build/test workflows, for instance) in a terminal, though.

I’ve done similar things with pycharm. I can run pycharm locally but run a remote python process. .py files are automatically uploaded and I can debug over the network just fine. I know eclipse, and presumsbly others, can do the same.

Some servers, and some clients, only support one of them. I’ve run into servers without sftp and subsequently stopped using it, as scp always works. Also rsync does not exist on windows, for instance git bash has only scp AFAIK.

I suppose you could concat strings and do it in a finally clause? Or use python’s context managers and do the logging in the __exit__().
