In the case of MSSQL, it can — not because SELECTs can cause stats to become stale, you are right it’s only during updates etc, but rather the SELECT happens to notice the stats are out of date due to prior writes, and have not been updated

I’ve been burned by Apple Notes on iPhone many years ago. Toggling on iCloud sync copied my notes there, but I then toggled it off seconds later and my local copy of hundreds of notes got deleted.

I’ve been a long time Azure user, their SQL Azure product was very glitchy and had constant outages (“just add retries!”), it’s gotten better in the last year or so, but it was totally unacceptable.
