Not for very long at decent accuracy. My of the hip guess is minutes. The zero rate output is +/-20 deg/s for the part you listed with RMS noise of 0.02 deg/s.

It seems like the propagation issue is significant. What about radiation effects in semiconductors they will cause? What about using other modulation like QAM or OFDM at 60 GHz? What about advances in fiber?

I don't get this. Why don't they just use the LEON? It uses the SPARC instruction set, which is an open standard. The LEON is GPL, in VHDL, and has been widely used for years in space missions and other applications. And it alread

Yes, lots of spacecraft use traditional RTOSes like VxWorks, RTEMS, ThreadX, uCos, etc. Keep in mind that there are many computers on a large spacecraft - attitude control, command and data handling, instruments, and other microcontrollers.

Your assumptions are correct. And this is how the spacecraft industry operates. In fact, like rack units, CubeSats have "1U", "3U", etc. Spacecraft components and instruments are modular. Data interfaces vary, but 1553,

What a story and what dedication on the author's part to find the missing hikers. Though searching for bodies as a hobby sounds a bit morbid, I imagine the families appreciated the closure. It was interesting hearing his thought proces

You are looking at a simple embedded hardware platform, so C is going to be 90% of project. A few project may use C++. Even more fringe outliers might be assembler and Ada.

Am I the only one bothered that they mislabeled the Cascades and Sierras as the Rockies?
