Looking at Dow returns since 1975, you have about a 40% chance any given year of getting < 5% return.

I thought the same thing. My strategy was just to pay down loans as quickly as possible before putting money in stocks outside of retirement accounts. A flat year in the market doesn't make the OP's strategy worth it, not to men

Cool article. Another things worth mentioning is that lots of professional photo & graphics people have been using the Adobe RGB color space for almost 20 years which is "wider" than sRGB.

For other spacecraft, the Voyagers will hit 40 years this year. There are computers on them. If I remember correctly, they even updated software mid-mission to switch the forward error correction to Reed-Solomon for the later planet encount

I'm also systems/embedded and the OP made me a bit nervous. I have been primarily writing C (with some C++ and other languages) for my career of ~8 years. It seems like there are enough jobs available. Certainly not as many as web

Some books will remain relevant. A quick glance at my bookshelf of old but relevant books: K&R The C Programming Language, Programming with POSIX Threads (it's from the 90s but pthreads really hasn't changed), Algorithms, and

I'd love to work in an underground hard rock mine. Being under the surface has always fascinated me. One of my favorite hobbies is caving. I live in Denver, so the Henderson mine isn't too far away...

Just curious - what's the use case for 144 Hz? It's a multiple of 24 but not 30. 120 Hz is a multiple of both.

Is the thread sanitizer caught up to where valgrind (helgrind) was for detecting data races? I know a while back it wasn't but things may have changed.

Based on my quantity of down votes, I don't think many people got it. That will teach me to joke about Tesla on HN! Or maybe it just wasn't funny.

I wondered the same thing. There's a Wikipedia page about it that is less fluffy, but it still isn't clear: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigafactory_1 "Tesla had said that the factory will be up to 10 m

Where do you live in Colorado? I've had good luck gardening in both Boulder and Denver. High altitude gardening (e.g., in the mountains) is difficult, but that is more due to the short growing season than the soil.

Very cool. When I was in high school, I tried my hand at developing Game Boy games using a C compiler. Lots of good memories. Really hoping they do that Super Nintendo talk next year.

Does Vanguard offer Admiral target date funds? Something like an Admiral version of VFIFX would be nice. I don't see anything on the web about it.

It's more than what you said. Apple is a solid supply chain company and they understand quarter-to-quarter demand changes. It turns out that their Q1 estimates were too high by 10%. The initial estimates already accounted for the cycli

It doesn't seem like there is a ton of need for software in solar, but I could be wrong. It seems to me that solar technology is mostly in line of something like a power semiconductor. You need lots of people who understand semiconduct
