Wow, purchased, thank you! Code starts out tedious too but is worth it by the end. I guess for any technical subject you have to make sure you cover sufficient preliminaries to get all your readers up to speed.

I love this idea! I'm just a working programmer, but right now I'm trying to read through the highlights on research into temporal databases. People have been writing papers for 25-30 years, but it seems like not a lot has made it

Have you read Developing Time-Oriented Database Applications in SQL ? I am very fond of ranges (actually it's exclusion constraints that are the key addition IMO), but they are not even close to what I'd like to have. I want `PRI

Ha, I thought about RLS on system catalogs, but it's not supported. Here is a long thread about it: http://postgresql.nabble.com/Multi-tenancy-with-RLS-td586211... It is also possible to revoke privileges on pg_namespa

I've worked with Postgres, MySQL, Oracle, and SQL Server, and Postgres is my go-to choice. I can think of a few cons though: - Replication is harder to set up than MySQL. And there is no master-master replication like in MySQL. (Of cou

Do you feel that way about all ORMs or just ActiveRecord? How would you like it to be different?

Interesting connection! :-) As a web developer who has done mostly Rails for a long time, I default to ORMs. And it seems to me that the last 20 years of architecture theory boils down to "How do I put a layer in front of my database?&

After I wrote that comment I thought it might be worth submitting this Andl story to HN about Andl-on-Postgres: [0]. They write, "Relational expressions are converted into equivalent SQL and passed back to the Postgres SPI interface fo

I actually like SQL, but I'm glad people are willing to ask, "Can we do better?" I think for a working programmer, SQL is the only practical choice, but Tutorial D is an interesting attempt to improve (by C.J. Date, described

Since we're talking about Ubuntu, I would use the Ubuntu tools. They make it very easy to maintain several Postgres clusters side-by-side, e.g. /var/lib/postgresql/9.4/main vs /var/lib/postgresql

I've been trying out Phoenix, and it seems like the top contender for a Rails successor. It's not quite as fluent as Rails, but it's close. But I'm curious: since it is so much like Rails, won't it suffer from all t

I think it's completely viable, although probably less so with VC funds. I plug this book a lot on HN, but in Managing the Professional Service Firm, David Maister talks about how a firm has 3 goals that must stay in balance: profit, j

There were sysadmins doing automation before people invented DevOps, and they had similar challenges: finding time for "projects" in between fixing the printer. A good book on this is Time Management for System Administrators by T

This is a fun way to think about it. A more "economics" way is that you value your time more when you have less of it, so you might sell the 9th hour at a higher price than you'd sell the first. And that's why workers in
