They were probably thinking "How many features do I need to claim responsibility for in order to get that next salary / stock option boost?" By default feature creep tends to win out over less visible improvements: supporting

Generics still require FDA approval, which costs on the order of single digit $millions to obtain. Plus you’ve got to set up the plant to create the drug, which costs more $. Would you invest $millions in a product when a competitor (who pr

By definition, your friends are likely to be concentrated in specific sub-groups (that’s how friend networks work). So if you know one Facebook millionaire, the likelihood is that you know a bunch of them. By contrast, I don’t know any Face

I think at least some of the cynicism comes from founders offering salaries that are 30-40% of the rate they might get from 'bigcorp of choice' and then offering derisory amounts of equity in compensation. If the equity you offer

Fortunately, compiler writers have noticed this problem, and C/C++ compilers will spit out makefile snippets which define the dependencies for a given file. See the sample makefile above by danaliv.

Frankly at this point in time, when people say "Make" they mean GNU Make. Unix distributions that wish to remain stuck in the 1980s with their original BSD Make are welcome to do so, but no sane developer is going to use BSD Make

I note in passing that the AMD processor manual is explicit that all reads are checked against the privilege bit before being issued. It’s this protection that means that AMD processors are not subject to meltdown. All CPU manufacturers app

Have you got a reference for that statement? Because my interpretation of what has been said so far is that AMD deliberately chose not to allow speculative dependent loads that crossed privilege boundaries by enforcing permission checks on

If the problem is row-hammer style attacks on the TLB that let you map userspace writable pages into the kernel address space then any kernel entries remaining in the TLB when userspace is running are going to be a security hole. The proble

It’s not a URI. The google-authenticator pam library generates an image that encodes the secret which gets echoed to the terminal as a QR-code. No internet access required - just a camera on your phone to image the code. If you can take a p

The system is setup not to reveal the secret once it’s set. Technical users can root their phones to extract the secret of course, but most users wont be willing to go that far. You can of course set up a new secret & share it with mult

Granted, but (AFAICT) in this case the database was doing a full table scan because it didn’t think the index was in memory. Checking to see whether the index itself is already loaded seems like something the query planner in principle ough

But you don't know which blocks you'll need at planning time, so you can't really check that. Really? Postgres doesn't know which blocks are part of which tables / indexes? That seems ... suboptimal if so.

That feels like something the database could do for itself - checking whether a range of mmap()ed blocks are actually in memory or not is a single syscall. I guess for large indexes the overhead of walking the page tables is going to be lar
