The issue with a lot of mind-mapping software is that the data must be strictly hierarchical. Sometimes when brainstorming you want to represent data with cross-links or in multiple categories, which is where something like Graphviz, Instav

If you want to export to Visio, export to VDX which is the Visio Document XML format. IIRC it's documented on the Microsoft site, and I even wrote a VXD exporter for the Graphviz open source project which I then used for Instaviz. While dev

Instaviz author here. This is actually intentional, Instaviz is really optimized for quickly sketching out ideas and thoughts and not having to worry about layout. I'm planning a 2.0 version which will allow some reorganization of the nodes

zipzap has an easy-to-use interface and an efficient implementation. If you're interested in the design rationale, I've written some of them up here: https://github.com/pixelglow/zipzap/wiki/Design .

A video about an iPhone app I wrote. It uses shape recognition and graph layout algorithms to convert your sketches into graphs. Coming soon to the App Store, enjoy the video!
