Reminds me of an encounter in Nepal, where a Chinese guy with Baidu maps was lost finding his hotel, and Google on my phone wasn't exactly much better. OSM to the rescue (and thanks to everyone who contributed data for that)!

With Linux+glibc, malloc() makes use of different syscalls. Beside mmap(), there is also brk() in use: https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man2/sbrk.2.html The big question about all that is when this memory is

Over time I ended up with 21, 35, and 90mm as my go-to lenses. I used the 35 for many years now, which includes landscape pictures. With that said, I also use 90mm for that, because landscape pretty much covers the whole focal length spectr

What is "traditional reporting"? If you refer to these profit driven attention seeking media outlets which love to label themselves as "traditional media" I'd be careful assuming that their selection of news is any

I remember articles of the Airbus A350 requiring reboots every N days (150ish or so?). I remember the Patriot missile system required a reboot every 24 hours or so until they fixed the software defect which caused the time counting to drift

But the energy market is not natural, it is completely artificial, based on rules which are more befitting to a non-market setup. For example, Europe has the largest (not in size but connected power) synchronized grid in the world. That mea

Electricity, like an increasing bunch of other things, is part of the infrastructure. The amount and different levels of infrastructure pretty much define "civilization", do away with infrastructure and your civilization is done f

This argument sounds like "oh, in the end it doesn't matter, we can just continue on!". But this is completely wrong. You cannot dump 50°C hot water into rivers without consequences, and very far reaching consequences at that

Car makers are very well aware of the lock-in possibilities and execute them already. They were just very slow to wake up to the fast raise of, how to call it, "software defined car", and start pouring endless money now into this.

The speedometer is one thing, but even more "mission critical" are the warning/error symbols, which have a low-to-medium level safety rating on them. Speedometer probably would have that, too, but monitoring "fancy"

I always enjoy reading comments like that, because I'm using a Sony A7s with manual lenses at underground concerts for 8 years now. I must be doing something really wrong, or maybe it is not me, but the commenter being seriously off ..

Photography is a wide field, and aesthetics is in the eye of the beholder, as usual. For example, if you do photography which goes towards technical fields, architecture, forensics, archaeology, reproduction, documentation in general of wha
