That $200MM figure came from MocoSpace, a "potential" buyer, not from MySpace. But I don't think MocoSpace's offer was more than an attempt to grab attention for itself, which means it was to their benefit to quote a large number. From htt

One of my pet peeves is when people say that they have a MySpace instead of saying they have a MySpace account. I wonder how many of those people will hear that somebody sold MySpace for $35 million and get excited thinking they're about to

Howard Roark (of Ayn Rand's Fountainhead) would hate where Apple is taking their design. From the book: "His buildings are austere, logical, perfect, each a single thought in stone. He believes that buildings, like men, have souls, and that

Mobsters have accountants, drug dealers make loans, and I'll bet even hitmen have todo lists. Illegal operations function using the same business machinery that legal businesses do, so we shouldn't be surprised to see them adopting current

I just signed up. Here's my five minute impression: This is awesome. It's very simple and easy to use, and the list of personality traits/hobbies is well-populated. Plus it's just fun. Once you collect enough data, I would enjoy seeing vis

This is only tangentially relevant, but here's a fun audio clip of Richard Feynman actually talking about his safe cracking days at Los Alamos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJXy2QDlxT0 Also tangentially relevant is this xkcd strip: htt

This seems like a great way to build structures on the Moon. Imagine if we landed robots on the Moon to gather up moon dust into piles, and then satellites orbiting the moon could capture sunlight and direct that energy in the form of laser

I'm running a startup that 3D prints custom eyewear. When I explain 3D printing to somebody who isn't familiar with it, I usually show them this video of a wrench being made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW0NZgcq9yA Goodbye, wrench vid

I wouldn't say this issue is fully "worked out" yet. Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer. Most of what I know about this is from the last twenty minutes of googling. In 2007 a federal judge ruled that passwords aren't like keys to a safe, and th

Go visit http://www.ico.gov.uk/ and notice the large cookie warning at the top of the page. I'm all for empowering users and increasing their privacy, but it's going to become very annoying if this starts to appear on a lot of web sites.

This reminds me of the story from a few years ago when Diebold got itself in trouble for showing pictures of their voting machine keys online: http://www.bradblog.com/?p=4066#more-4066 This also has me thinking about the "Light Field" sto

I agree with 19 of these motivation hacks, but I've found that #2 doesn't work for me. (#2: Make a big public commitment.) Derek Silvers explains how this technique can backfire at http://sivers.org/zipit and in his TED Talk at http://w

When I met my girlfriend, I told her that her name was very mathematically pleasing. As a sign of my affection I figured out a formula that spells out her name from 1 to infinity. (Where A=1, B=2, ... Z=26) f(x) = (13x+1)%26+((x+3)%4%3%2)*

Paul Graham is from Pittsburgh. If he still has some emotional attachment to the city, perhaps he would be willing to invest in some of the great startups we have here?
