Ferrari can blacklist you from receiving allocations for new cars, but AFAIK they can't limit your access to the used market.

> This is why the New Yorker is such a piece of shit publication. Where did that come from? As far as I can tell, this article has absolutely nothing to do with the New Yorker.

Wonderful, but if you make $100,000 you can't afford a nice house in the suburbs of SF either.

I would assume there's a lot of flexibility in non-funded PhDs.

I hadn't heard of the truSDX - I'll probably pick one up! Seems like the cheapest new HF radio with computer control out there, sounds perfect for getting started. I would assume I can connect it to a 12V socket in my car for full

Ham Radio is incredibly diverse, and different people get different things out of it. Many people get a basic license and use a handheld radio to talk to people in their area through a "repeater" (basically a big range extender) o

The $250 Sonos Era 100 can take 3.5mm in with a dongle, but if you already have other Sonos gear and a Pi this is definitely a more reasonable solution.

That's essentially how smartphone IC cards work in Japan. You can load the virtual card using a credit/debit card, and spend it (offline, I think) at train stations and many shops. You can also get a regular plastic IC card, and l

My experience with modern leftists is that they will over-analyze political concepts and expend all their energy debating with other leftists. That doesn't sound "without criticism or question".

Ticket money shouldn't end up back in the police fund. It should go into the general fund.

Going fare free would induce demand which would increase operating costs, so it's not that simple.

It depends on where you are. I had a stolen backpack recovered when I was travelling in Zurich. I stopped by the train station police, showed them the AirTag tracking, and they sped down the freeway (lights & sirens!) to catch up to the

I'm running 4K, 30fps on a 4080 on medium settings (with a decent size city). It's not good performance, but it's plenty for a city builder.

login.gov is the government's (quite fantastic) auth flow - id.me is a private one that the IRS contracted. I wish there were a rule that all online government services needed to use login.gov, but alas it's optional.

I'm so jealous of folks with Init7, I'd love having a home ISP that acknowledges that some of their customers might actually know what they're doing. Sadly I'm not in a position to be starting an ISP...

I'm on AT&T PON and I get higher than I pay for (I pay for 1Gbps and regularly get 1.2Gbps+ through a 5GBase-T link). It helps that I live in a small town and my neighbors aren't very noisy (in a networking sense)

DOCSIS is for cable, not fiber. Fiber equipment is usually ISP-specific - I'm pretty sure I can't replace my AT&T ONT (even if I can replace the gateway in a hacky way).

As a general rule, Cloudflare hot paths (CDN, etc.) tend to still work during an API outage. Communication between the API servers and the hot paths are mostly async, and (usually) work fine independently.

Switzerland only has a bit more population than the Houston metroplex and is about the same size - why can't the Houston metroplex be great like Switzerland? I wouldn't be moving away from Houston if they could accomplish that.

Orbstack runs Docker inside its own lightweight VM. It doesn't use any of Docker Desktop's virtualization. I'm not sure if it handles scheduling any better though.
