I don't understand why the Siberian Times makes it so frequently to the front page of HN, but either way, I like it.

I'm not affiliated with either but I've used Faust a lot. I believe SOUL intends to be directly supported by various platforms, whereas Faust compiles to whatever kind of code runs on different platforms. So if you like Faust, you

The "Aphex face" manifests as an clearly audible weird abstract sound at the end of the track. It sits nicely in the mix, but it's also distinct from the actual music - I would say it comes across like a signature rather than

The article does not present whaling as an art. It goes to great lengths to emphasize the cruelty of whaling. The title refers to the variety of art associated more or less directly with whaling.

I wonder if Robert Jordan was inspired by this when he wrote The Great Hunt (spoiler follows, I guess!) The protagonist experiences a hallucinatory battle with his arch nemesis, then learns that it was somehow projected in the sky: "I

This does not perform normalization. The Github repo does have the tag "audio-normalization" but the tags seem a bit all over the place.

It contains a dynamic range compressor, but it also chains more effects including a multiband compressor, so overall it falls outside the definition of a dynamic range compressor. Naming chains of effects is always an interesting exercise

Compute shaders in WebGL would be great. But why would they improve the performance in this case? Right now it's implemented as a fragment shader, which to me seems appropriate here.

It's a valid theory, but the page you linked says 2.3k commits over that period. More than enough to annihilate backwards compatibility unless you're very deliberate about it.

Indeed, "List of fatal dog attacks in the United States (2010s)" is currently the 15th longest article on Wikipedia. "Taikyoku shogi" is far behind but still respectable at #80. But of course neither can touch the absolu

The delay (or more accurately smoothing) of the mouse position is a hack to make the mouse trail look more like a streak rather than repetitive little blobs. I call it a hack because the proper solution would be to have a line-shaped source

It's well done, though anyone who regularly browses Shadertoy or similar websites has probably been desensitized to old-school (yes, old school!) liquid demos compared to what the cool kids do these days... but well done nonetheless!

Having converted a few things to wasm, I think porting SuperCollider would be considerably more difficult than modulating a bunch of WebAudio oscillator nodes together. Especially since SC is architected as multiple processes communicating

It's always worth raising this possibility, though it looks really unlikely in this case. Volcanic and geothermal activity has never released toxic phenols as far as I can tell. Instead you get simpler compounds like carbon dioxide, su

I think you're talking about alpine climbing or mountaineering. Rock climbing in the modern sense does not mean that, and overhangs (not undercling, that means something else) are very common.

Whatever you make with this will be contained in a webpage. You can turn it into an app using a tool like Apache Cordova. Not the most efficient approach in terms of battery/memory/etc usage, but it works.

They're just trying to be accurate. The most important aspect of Democritus' atoms is indivisibility, so that's why fundamental particles like quarks are technically a better fit.
