I'm using "prized" here as a synonym of "favored"; perhaps it's a bit archaic. I don't intend to alter or misconstrue the meaning of the survey result. Certainly, a front-end developer has a choice of com

Quite a few of those stats seem suspect. For example, I personally find it hard to believe that "80% of professional developers" prize Javascript above all other languages. Seems unlikely based on my network (which of course is

Literally the first Google search result has it all laid out - well cited, at that. I would hope that you avail yourself of this wonderful resource in the future, saving time both for yourself and for others.

I find a lot of use in mine as a voice-control system for home automation; it's great to be able to say, "OK Google, lights out!" as I head upstairs to bed. The convenience and _naturalness_ of the interaction is just so cool

rdio had award-winning iOS, Android, and Windows Phone apps based on Xamarin, with around 70% of the code shared across all platforms. The remainder was all platform-specific code, but still in C#. Sadly, they went bankrupt, though not bec

Oh, I've never seen that before! We've never encountered this kind of MERGE-related race condition before, but I'm not sure that we'd recognize it if we did. Probably it would surface as a failed transaction, but our me

I write JVM-based server code, so I can't really comment on the experience of using postgresql on .NET. I think that I tried it a few years back, and had an OK time of it, but I wasn't using EF. Sorry!

As a preface, let me say that SQL Server is great so far. It's rock-solid, and the query planner is wonderful. T-SQL itself is my only real gripe. That said, here are a few things that annoy me: The major bummer during development w

Better late than never - this is a welcome alternative to Amazon's RDS support for postgresql, the lack of which has been the primary reason I've kept personal workloads off of Azure. I'm excited to take this for a spin! Azu

This looks to be "language features" only - so, lambdas, but no Java 8 APIs. Optionals, streams, etc are not included. ...I hope they fix IntelliJ's default suggestions, which try to turn all of your loops into `.stream()` c

I don't disagree that there exist a good number of people making $WAY_MORE, but it certainly seems like that number of people is greatly overstated - as in, for every such senior engineer I personally know, I know probably 10-20x makin

An excellent example of playing the game he sought to escape. Isn't it all, from religion to the vague algebra in TFA, just a riff on the only real question? ...not that I'm above it, either. As a 35-give-or-take person, existent

I'll note here that the email startup Acompli, started in 2013, was acquired in 2014 for $200m. Their product is now Outlook Mobile. Gmail hasn't had nearly the stifling effect that one might assume!

I remember browsing through their job listings a year or two ago, which gave me the same impression. All of product engineering was in Boston - SF just has sales-type roles.

The Acompli (now Outlook Mobile) acquisition has gone quite nicely so far (source: am on said team). That's just one recent example; there are quite a few MS products that came on board via acquisition.
