This is absolutely correct. Apps should be completely isolated by default but users should be allowed to add access to other resources on a per-resource basis.

Per-application permissions, sandboxing applications, and one-click installs are great for the users. I'd like to have a filesystem like Plan 9's, where an app cannot even see outside of its box unless I let it. But for some apps I'd like t

But also any GPL project can poach from a BSD project, but not the converse, so BSD contributions are (technically) a strict subset of GPL contributions.

What a good observation! Commoditize the complements by dropping a free competitive software that any entity can use and modify. And they've also restricted modifications from other companies with the trademark, so they have control over th

The US companies are disgusting, but it's a far cry from the wretchedness of the legislators that are proposing the laws whispered in their ears.

I understand. I think you are right that it wouldn't make things more hard, I misunderstood that as implying that people wouldn't make memory mistakes under those conditions. So I was writing that one would require a GC to eliminate those k

I think if you have objects and a reference-counting GC already this problem is pretty easy, but I assume the C programmers don't want that for performance or portability or some other reason. NSInvocation has a signature of the variable ty

Also there are plenty of us that are pro-reform and anti-outrageous lawsuits who are also against the infringement as well. When I see a large player in the industry fuck up and "steal" someone's copyrighted work, it's yet another example o

How about Kerlang? Pronounced by adding a k sound to the front of Erlang.

I was thinking this also! The difference between Erlang and an OS seems like little more than device drivers. Moving BEAM into kernel-space would improve the speed of the thread switching and IPC. So Erlang is a particularly good language t

I hope this won't come off as tactless, but is there something going on in there more significant than CAS and writing to the database if it's a different value? Because I do non-blocking programming as a hobby and I'd love to know.

I knew about rlwrap, but hadn't bothered to learn anything in depth. Thanks, keywords are a great feature that I wouldn't have known without this.

This is the best one I've ever seen. The description seems fairly benign, but then one needs a ridiculous number like A(187196) to describe the applications of Ackermann's function to get a weak lower bound . And the first two steps are ra

We've told them multiple times their country is sliding downhill. If Americans want laws "protecting" them from terrorists, let them have it. The ones who get clued in can emigrate to an actually free country.

I just know I've made some mistakes in the past that would have been caught by a type checker, and I'll probably make similar mistakes in the future. I like trying stuff in the REPL, but when an idea has solidified, I'd like to have it full

I don't think there's a mass hysteria, is there? Certainly a few arrogant Haskellers, but I don't see an epidemic. Static typing eliminates an entire class of bugs. It's not like any of us need it, it's just a powerful tool. It might be a n

This is one of the exact scenarios Apple is trying to prevent with Gatekeeper. Although I think Apple implemented it poorly and I strongly object to their code signing policies, I do hope more OS's include application-level permissions and

PDF's don't even work well on my Kindle, let alone my phone. Half of the PDF's I have for research are taller than my screen at a readable size, but inexplicably two-column. PDF is not the ultimate solution to portable documents.

What you're arguing against is not the point of my statement. If the vendor does not implement something like that, it should still be available as a third-party software. It doesn't need to be a security problem using a system like permiss
