It’s also in their best interest to set the price so as to maximize their own profits. If switching costs or monopoly power allow them to set a higher price, they will do so. Have we learned nothing from a decade of subscription services?

Did you have a particularly bad experience? Things have changed _a little_ since 1992. I switched from Windows in 2018 because I was trying to install some Python packages, and it was hours of work to find the specific visual C++ runtimes t

Just had a great experience with this on Linux. One time in 20, when my X1 Carbon (Pop OS 22) resumes from sleep, Bluetooth doesn’t work. This kinda sucks because my mouse is Bluetooth. After 10 minutes with Gemini, we found the incantation

I use the Nexstand K2 (well, the Chinese knockoff I got for $5), and I bent some coat hangers to attach to the top of the stand and tilt the laptop forward. I’m a tall guy, and the top of the screen is even with my eyes. Bonus is that with

Desktop CPUs have a lot more punch than their equivalent mobile parts. My current dev machine is an X1 carbon from 2019. Compiling go code is slower than I’d like, some JavaScript-heavy websites like Jira take a couple extra seconds to load

I can't get over how expensive these observability platforms are. Last I looked (and looked again just now), if we were to take all our structured logs from all services and send them to Datadog with our current retention policy, it wo

Typora is the best markdown authoring experience out there, even surpassing obsidian imho. I wish I could use it every time I interact with markdown.

If you turn off you watch history in account settings, then youtube.com is just a passive-aggressive black screen telling you to turn it back on. It’s beautiful. When you click over to subscriptions, you see only the stuff that you subscrib

Everyone’s so excited about the wave if windows users coming to Linux. Those people already have monitors. I switched in 2018 and was surprised I couldn’t use fractional scaling on one monitor like I’d been doing for years on windows.

I had the same problem, and solved it this way: Find a close friend for whom reaching out and convincing people is not draining, and partner with them. They do the reaching out, you take care of the logistics. The framework that helped me u

In my own experience (and from everything I’ve read), LLMs as they are today don’t help us as an industry build a higher mountain of software because they don’t help us deal with complexity — they only help us build the mountain faster.

The Demon-Haunted World, by Sagan. I read it during a journey that ended up leading me out of religion. That book showed me so clearly how strange it is to believe in supernatural events.

This piqued my curiosity. Are you the author of the paper? For this principle to become widely known, it needs to be communicated in a more succinct way. 400 pages is too much to ask people to invest. Even so, as far as I understand the gis

I’m currently fighting the “don’t use Gemini to write internal documents” war at my company. It’ll be long and hard, but I think I’ll eventually prevail. Every time someone throws a document written by AI at me, it feels so disrespectful.

Yeah this happened to me at least once, and I had to spend several hours with low-level recovery software to get my files back. This was the catalyst that finally got me to ditch windows for good 7 years ago.
