Hey, grantheaslip, I know this is offtopic, but I'm LDS and just fwiw, we aren't "a group which at its very core believes that friends of mine are inferior, sinful, damaged goods because of the way that they were born." In fact, the LDS ch

Yeah, there is no doubt the LDS blogosphere linking back to the site gives it a mighty boost in pagerank.

FYI the t-mobile people told me that too, but I went ahead and ordered it and it was just fine. Of course this was right before they retired the online sales... I got it for $199 + a regular contract...

Sounds like exactly the kind of purchase a company like AOL would make. It's a high visibility addition to their portfolio of eclectic randomness. Which makes money. "Who knew they'd end up savvy?" is my only response... Oh and I suppos

One problem I've had at every place employment I've worked at in the last few years is getting a VM which matches production to use as a sandbox. With this kind of thing it would make that a snap. "What's the difference between this and p

I dunno much about the HP board or the HP culture. But having spoken personally with Ben Horowitz about creating company culture, and after working at Ning, which is a heavily Horowitz + Andreeson-based culture, for nearly a year, I can sa

As wglb points out, they frequently talk on their amateur radio as a means of entertainment. A lot of astronauts that go up to the ISS get licenses so they can chat with people when they get bored and have some free time on their hands.

While I agree that video games are compelling to the 11-14 year old boy scouts that I've spent a lot of time with over the last few years, I know of a few who are prolific readers as well as being competent gamers (we have video game nights

I think there's still a vibrant perl community out there, but I wouldn't say the perl community is growing. I don't know that I'd use dead or alive but maybe "plateaued".

Oh I misread the question! You're asking if it's rare for linguists to learn 3 languages? I dunno. But I think linguists who get offended if people ask them that are kinda of silly...

No, I learned them a long time before I did linguistics, in the course of other non-linguistics pursuits. I got into linguistics later on because of the computational linguistics angle.

Having taken a Masters in Linguistics, and learned 3 languages besides my native one, I'd say that 1, 3 + 4 are basically the key to learning any language. It really is "Use it or lose it" when it comes to learning a new language.

Screen scraping means: you write a web crawler which loads up the web page (in this case, takes your bank login user name and password, puts them in the login form on the bank website, pretends to be you and loads up the relevant web pages

I'm thinking about getting an Android phone and like the idea of the unlockedness of the N1. Does the touch part suck enough that it makes it overly difficult to use the phone? I had a G1 before and it seemed usable enough...
