The trouble with rules that remain on the books despite not usually being enforced is that they create opportunities for selective enforcement when they decide to crack down on you for other reasons, such as your political views.

I've always thought Dasher (project at http://www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk/dasher/ ) was interesting. It's intended for people with disabilities, but maybe it could be adapted for program text entry?

Great to hear themes are close! I know lots of people like the black-background-light-print look, but it's essentially unusable for me--serious eye strain. I'm eagerly awaiting a theme with dark print on light background so I can give Bes

Store encrypted data redundantly in the cloud, with peer-to-peer crypto magic for key distribution? I have no idea how you'd protect against one of your "friends" deciding to release your stuff in plaintext.

Tip: Use the bread-maker (or a heavy-duty mixer with dough hook) to save time on the initial mixing and kneading, but do the remaining steps by hand -- it's much more satisfying, and once you practice a bit, you'll get better bread. You'l

Take a weekend and check out Central or Eastern Washington. Lots of sun here, though not much of a tech startup scene.

I think your scale is off a bit. I'm not sure what "these far off galaxies" refers to, but according to this Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nearest_galaxies all the local group galaxies are within 10 million li

Nice. Just registered. Various glitches on the website where you fill out a form (received via https), hit submit, and get the API error page saying https required.

What I'd like to try sometime is NIX ( http://nixos.org/nix/ ). Getting it to work well on OSX would be the trick. Edit: They say it should run on Mac OS X.

The first form screams "Add me to your prospects database, so your automation can start your sales people hounding me". The second form softens that impression a bit. I suspect it might work better on me.

Maybe you had to be in the right mood for it. I found it very entertaining, though long. I liked the neophilia vs neophobia with mushrooms. Referring back to the white-on-yellow highlighting several paragraphs along is a clever way to un

Someone in the thread mentions a plan that seemed inevitable at that time to convert GNU emacs to the guile flavor of scheme. Obviously that never happened. Does anybody know the story?

Reminds me of interfaces in Google Go. No rigid class hierarchy to cram our objects into. Just implement a list of methods and you're good.

A new technology needs to be MUCH better than any technology it hopes to supplant. Of course "better" can have many different meanings. Is Parrot 1.0.0 radically better than other (non-perl) VMs?
