I totally agree with this. I am a quant working at a bank writing trading strategies in C++. I have a colleague in "Infrastructure" (they call it) who sits two desks away from me and he writes C++ code that loads my code and runs it on a ma

Yes, they're discouraging Win32 use overall (even in the x86/x64 space). But that does not mean you can't build native apps (ie non .NET) for WOA - you can use C/C++ out of the box. You are just bound to use MetroUI and WinRT as your primar

Well, MS provides Visual Studio for this - which isn't a bad toolchain, in my opinion.

It doesn't - it provides a perfectly equivalent platform. In all cases, it will be the codecs registered with the OS that would be used - so the quality of the media cannot be better/worse. Where this differs is from a developer perspective

That's because usually there is a browser-based layer which runs that HTML/JavaScript. Here it is Metro UI (via HTML5) powered using JavaScript (running natively on Windows) - equivalent to a C++ native app with a Metro UI.

All-in-all, it's a big, big play on Windows 8/RT. A kernel that can perform optimally on ARM/Intel on mobile devices and also support PC devices is a huge achievement - the entire thread-library would have to be one super-cool piece of soft

Have people forgottten satellites? You don't have to go along the Earth's crust, you know! A low orbit satellite with height above surface <= r * (0.5 * theta * cosec (theta /2) - 1) where r = radius of earth and theta = angle subtended

Create a new Discuss HN section even - if mods don't want the front page to be inundated with meta-discussions. Those who have grievances would be able to voice them and discuss those publicly - even the mod replies ought to be public. If t

No, we aren't taking differeent lessons from stat. mech. - your understanding of thermodyanmics is flawed (there are no two views here - this is physics). S = k ln W is an entropy model for an ideal gas with uncorrelated particle motions an

I totally missed your last statement: "By contrast, in physics, thermodynamics is firmly based on the microscale discipline of statistical mechanics." Thermodynamics is absolutely the most aggregate branch of physics. delta(E_int) = delta

I agree with you that economics has nowhere near as much predictive power as physics (trained in physics, stuck in the financial-sector as a boring quant - I can testify to both). Nor it has infallible foundations (rational behaviour? game-

But you did earn that increase in value. A home you couldn't afford in 2006 because it cost $300,000 is now affordable at $175,000. The purchasing power of your dollars did go up (actually it didn't "go up" - it is reaching it's fair value

No - Fed loans are not backed by taxpayer money - they are backed by the faith in Fed to replace those dollars with assets of equivalent value. And no, it's not a stealth tax on anyone who holds dollars. The popular view is that ok, the s

Voxels would be too heavy. I have worked with volume rendering before and it's way too expensive to do it at this scale (although their scene with the light passing through the volumetric smoke column kind-of defied this). Some real-time ve

Some branch of the GPL'ed idTech 4, I suppose? Back in the day, OGRE, Crystal Space and Irrlicht used to be the dominant FOSS ones. Crystal Space is a bit outdated now. Irrlicht is stuck at DX 9.0 and OpenGL 3.x OGRE seems the most likely c

Raytracing for one. Also, none of the graphics engines really capture the wave-nature of light - intereference/diffraction etc. Radiosity captures a bit of this but from an intensity/energy point of view.
