Great, thanks for the reply. I do hydrodynamic modelling at work but on much larger scales (hundreds of metres to tens of kilometres - with FVCOM ( http://fvcom.smast.umassd.edu ) in particular) and the turbulence is handled by su

I don't know if the footage is at normal speed, it looks slightly slowed down to me, which would impart a sort of gloopy feel to the water. I wonder if speeding up the playback rate would increase the realism. edit: OK, I downloaded it

Does anyone know if this accurate when compared with observations of flows at this scale? It certainly looks realistic, but I wonder if that's "just" a trick of the eye rather than it accurately reproducing the processes whic

I've used UDF on external drives. Its only limitation was that Windows XP wouldn't write to UDF filesystems (from memory, Windows Vista onwards support writing to UDF). It has been a nice little filesystem to use on thumbdrives wh

No. If the script has the #! set as /bin/bash, then it will run as bash.

My personal favourite terminal on Linux is yakuake (global hotkey for bringing the window to the foreground is really useful).

Note that getting pay as you go mobile broadband requires no such documentation, so in a pinch, you can use that in the interim.

Fair point. What I meant was a phone that does calls and texts the majority of the time (no need for 3G) but has the ability to connect to a 3G (or better) network if needed and can share that connection via some wireless means (wifi, bluet

What would be nice is a phone like this with GPS and 3G/4G (with tethering). That way I could ditch my smartphone and use my tablet for actual browsing with the feature phone serving as a router only (whilst still being usable as a pho

I appreciate that it's not magic and agree that it should be demystified. Having said that, doing it once in the past in an undergrad class and remembering it 10 years later when a relevant article on some website is posted are two dif

It's Colin Percival: author of tarsnap, former BSD security officer and considered something of an authority on crytography. I presume his maths skills are therefore suitably well polished to be able to pull this stuff from memory.

Can we get a [2012] added to the title? This is somewhat misleading, otherwise.

Well I'll be damned. ImageMagick is like ffmpeg, every time you think of something that needs doing, it's already been done, but you never think to look for it.

Can you tell me how to do this? I used to use Mendeley before it was bought by Elsevier, and it had a useful function of exporting your entire library to a single BibTeX file automatically each time you added a new reference. I've not

<offtopic> I know that grammar comments are probably not welcome here on HN, but I think that since you seem to have an interest in it, I'd point this out: "Its" only has an apostrophe when it's a contraction of &q

Total energy in the system is radiation received from the sun minus that emitted from the earth's surface back into space. Both of these things are pretty well understood and fairly simple to calculate. As for the ice age business, cli

The oceans have been absorbing the heat from the atmosphere, yielding the flat trend in atmospheric temperatures. The total energy in the system is increasing.

It's pretty slow at checking for new versions, though. I get the impression that's because of the way they seem to scan your disk (it seems to be a brute force "scan every directory on the disk looking for .exe files").

If your pi is just running ownCloud and it's got access to a relatively fast connection, there shouldn't be any problem with doing that. I'm thinking of getting a VPS to run my own server as the limitations of a hosted accoun

Your principal complaint about people using Vim/Emacs as Python IDEs is that to do so requires customisation of the default configurations. Yet, in this post, you go on to include fairly lengthy instructions on how to customise PyCharm

Use an unstructured grid (triangulation) to connect the elements. This is routinely used in numerical modelling (think computational fluid dynamics) to generate linked data sets from scatter data (such as this) in 2 and 3D (i.e. a surface a
