One of my previous employers had an open-plan office, and after a management change introduced mandatory hotdesking. You had to move desks every day -- management checked every morning and wrote people up if they sat at the same desk for tw

Thanks for the details :) I said 747 because I was thinking Boeing at the time, and that was the first of their aircraft I could think of! I was also thinking something smaller like a Cessna might not have the same setup because they'r

They're certainly going that way. Group DMs don't work with the API (in that there's not even a "hey log onto the website your client doesn't support this" notification). A ton of features have been removed fro

To put it bluntly -- the prevailing mindset is that customer support is a cost-centre. It's hard to reliably measure customer satisfaction, so its value is misunderstood. And if you're the only game in town with your own little wa

There's a point where shortcuts are appropriate, and there's a point where the shortcuts actually cost you time. You can spend ten weeks messing around with "quick fixes" when it'd take two weeks to redesign the uns

There's also the prevailing management theory that "all staff can do the same job" -- I've seen this in various perverted and butchered variants of Lean and Agile. The theory is sound -- at least two engineers on a proje

That sounds so unlikely that most people would dismiss it as silly... I'm not a pilot, but if the controls are linked -- why would the plane need to know where the pilot is sitting (or even have a switch for it)? (Any 747 pilots readin

What stunned me was that the German legal system is going after the managers who made the decisions, not the engineers who implemented them (undoubtedly under duress). In any other country -- and especially UK/USA -- I'd expect to

Unfortunately I don't sell the ready-made units any more -- they're just not cost-effective to sell like that at a price the market will bear. I want to do a redesign with more cost-effective components (an STM32 Nucleo and a shie

The store closed years ago. I was working 7am-6pm for a long while and just didn't have the time to put in. I still have about a dozen boards and a few components, actually. Look me up on Twitter (@philpem) or Mastodon (m0ofx@mastodon.

There's an "on penalty of perjury" clause in the law (if memory serves, it's part of a clause which must be present for a takedown notice to be valid). In practice, David often can't afford to sue Goliath. I don
