I don't think I quite understand how the two interact, but wouldn't your example work with either lexical or dynamic bindings? > (let ((foo 1)) ; foo is lexical > (define (bar n) (+ foo n)) > (bar 2) ; =&#

The actual paper is linked at http://www.som.yale.edu/faculty/keith.chen/papers.htm The article doesn't give what seems to be a pretty important detail. Children and monkeys chose the new item 63 and 60% of the time, respectively. That su

But also from the article: "After identifying three colors preferred about equally by a monkey -" They didn't assume there were no preferences. Their mistake was to assume they could measure them precisely enough.

Union seems to be implemented in clisp by copying the second set, and adding to the copy any elements from the first set that aren't in the second. If there's a duplicate in the first set, they both get added because it's the original of th

He talks about how problems are caused by IE8 identifying as IE. So sites which check for IE to run hacks run them anyway, even though they aren't necessary any more. Couldn't this be fixed by rebranding? Instead of IE8, release a totally n

This is neat. I'd like to see it extended to things other than websites, like MSN messenger. Not sure how that would work though.

If I understand the article correctly, what they're attempting isn't the Turing test. The bot will be interacting with people in Second Life, and they'll be hoping none of those people realise it's a bot. That's not the same as trying to fo

What I use for 11 is take the final digit, subtract the penultimate, add the third last, etc. The result = the original number (mod 11). Obviously it works if you start at the MSD, but then you need to worry about whether there's an even nu

"B does not know whether C can see anybody with blue eyes." - that's not true. C can see A. Yes. But what you quoted was part of A's reasoning. A doesn't know that he has blue eyes. If he doesn't, then C can only see B with blue eyes. And

No. Suppose there are only three people with blue eyes. A knows that B can see at least one blue-eyed person. And B knows that C can see at least one blue-eyed person. But A doesn't know that B knows that. A reasons: if I have brown eyes,

It's all meaningless unless you intend it to have meaning. But tables are probably easier to work with. (That may change in future, but right now I don't think any mainstream tools assume markup is semantic. And in any case, tables aren't m

Even in a graphical browser, I found the permalink icons really intrusive. I'm used to things like that being used to sign off posts ( http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/11/29/erskine_steps_down/ ), and it breaks the flow to see them at the

What's the difference between "adding a feature" and "improving the site"? I always took them to be the same thing. In that sense, you're either adding a feature or you're stagnating. (Or, I suppose, going backwards.)

That would be the equivalent of writing down a few notes for your essay beforehand and then posting the first draft. The revisions are needed for a reason, which doesn't go away if you're talking instead of typing.

You could always update the UI on the assumption that it will succeed, and then check the return value. If you get failure, notify the user somehow. Making the UI seem a slight bit more responsive might not be really worth it, of course.
