Those horror stories are actually somewhat scary for a business owner. Not being able to dictate what time your discount starts? If people have a bad experience with the Groupon at your store, the store gets inflicted with tons of bad revie

25 cents on top of 50 cents. You have to take into consideration the discount they are required to give as well.

It is 100% dependant on industry. Ask any retailer if a Groupon makes sense when they depend on the margins their products produce. The only way it makes sense is if they are able to get large volume discounts on whatever they are trying to

Sustainable means it doesn't hinder the business like a 50% off coupon and a 25% split on the revenue thereafter. Most local businesses cant afford that and realize it too late. The company I work for is thegolocalcard.com (won't plug it ag

Disclaimer: I work for a sustainable deal site for local businesses. One factor that hbr is not mentioning is business owners (national and local) that participate on Groupon, for the most part, are having bad experiences. Obviously this de

Definitely not conspiracy. AirBnB is probably flailing around trying to figure out what is the best way to get to turn around this month long PR nightmare. Orphan blog post probably sounded like a brilliant idea, until it hit hacker news an

And all of this may be moot anyway with the government trying to track everything online anyway. http://news.cnet.com/8301-31921_3-20084939-281/house-panel-a... Can a court really penalize KISSMetrics when the government asks ISPs to trac

Preface: What I am about to say is a complete and utter assumption. One would assume that ATT did some analysis on bandwidth usage patterns amongst heavy users. They probably came to the conclusion that the top 5% of bandwidth hogs account

I donate to OCW as well (LOVE OCW) but I don't think any of this information is on a closed system. I believe JSTOR allowed all mit ip addresses access (for free) to every article in their system. Aaron's downloads came from an MIT address

He violated Terms of Service for a large database of journals at an egregious rate. If he had stolen say...10,000 articles this may be a non-issue. The fact that they can tie 4,000,000 articles to him is what makes this so bad. The other pa

I do understand your reasoning and logic behind your belief. If you were to ask someone now: "What application do you use to video chat with?" the answer is most likely going to sway heavy to Skype. If you ask that question in 3 to 9 months

I don't think Skype is a competitor to Facebook at all. Facebook has had a good partnership with Microsoft for several years and have finally found a good social element that Microsoft brings to the table (Skype). Skype is great for video c

I am going to start off by saying I haven't read the article. With that said, didn't Google deny Facebook from scraping contacts off of gmail a year (or two) ago? I forget the exact method they implemented, but I know it stunted Facebook's

I don't think this is too much to ask. Anyone who uses apps on Facebook are well aware of the permissions and probably deny some apps beacause of what they ask for. Sure some of the Android permissions are a little obtuse, but users are def

Totally agree with what base said. The hindrance in developing for all phones is the OS. Some ATT/T-Mobile phones are not allowed to upgrade to 2.2, heck sometimes not even 1.6+. I ran into that problem with an app I launched last year. Doh

The AOL buyout has really pushed me to stay away from anything they write. While the quality of articles and writing was dropping pre-buyout, it has definitely gotten much worse post-buyout.
