And then in 5 years you decide you really want to move to australia, but can't because the points system rewards those with degrees.

So you refactor until the noise goes away. Why throw out the signal with the noise? Modern software engineering theory 101.

That would be great. Maybe we could get some TDD people in there. Some competent c engineers, rather than code cowboys.

What do we have, if not words, to convey complex meanings? We can't all be telepaths like you. His wife doesn't need to be kept in line... his wife needs to be kept out of company business unless she's an employee.

Let's see... I would take the template file, fill in some values, scp it up to it's final location on the server, and run chmod on the server. I guess I could learn the "one-line" ansible way to do it, but I'd also

Well this is clearly aimed at people who are frustrated with Chef, above and beyond the frustrations of figuring out how to install ruby (just install from source, rvm sucks). If someone doesn't already have Chef installed, why would t

I guess you could load your favorite language runtime. That sounds like a one line change. In your shell script. Which is the point. I'm betting at some point you look back and realize that much of your config doesn't need a secon

Portability always comes at a high complexity cost. If you don't see it personslly, someone else in your org does. Instead, look at why you think you need portability.

That's an informative little blog post. I hope it inspires porting more IDEs & language runtimes to mobile.

Does google pay significantly more than, say, any old rails job? Perks don't really impress me. 20% time sounds interesting, but I hear it's gone. Why would I want to deal with the interview process?

I would be careful not to confuse having a reaction with having empathy. If nothing you do can stop that war or famine, then an emotional reaction serves no one. Is it healthier? That's subjective.

That's actually great advice. Exercise + changing your environment will help get creativity flowing. But that's all outlined in tons of confreaks videos.

Luckily, there are ways to get better without actually coding. 1) Watch every confreaks video on youtube. You probably won't remember any of it (I don't). That's good. It's not being filed away in your memory, it's

To get better, you need to know what to build. You need the path to be laid out before you. That's what college is right? And endless string of projects with clearly defined specifications. With your years of bugfixing experience, you

A little off-topic, but how hard is it for a US citizen interested in having lived in two countries in his life to get a dev job in the EU? I imagine most devs that come in from another country are coming from at least within the EU, and I
