Er, first, if you'd like to call me stupid, please do so openly. Personally, I like safety-features on tools. You know that feature that stops rotating blades when they come into contact with fingers? Would "just don't touch the blade" have

Nobody is telling Linus he messed something up. Are we not allowed to raise issues, discuss and bring forth our perceived problems? "Use it as it is or GTFO" doesn't seem like the Open Source way. The problem here is that there are people t

You mean it actually makes sense if you forget the other VCS versions of that command, and know git's? Because ignoring all VCS experience I have, "checkout" would indicate to me that I could "check something out" as in "have a peek at it

It theoretically ends where it's most comfortable for a wide range of people, experienced or not. And hyperbole doesn't help. Telling me to pull first so it can incorporate the remote changes isn't a big deal I think. Where does this idea c

That's not being paranoid, that's depending on me being paranoid. People make mistakes, and a clearer separation of these two functions would make it harder to make this mistake.

I can't be sure, but maybe they are giving everyone their own copy so stuff like accidentally removing things people already bought doesn't happen. IANAL but it seems like this would make the data _yours_ instead of them providing it as a s

The page looks completely empty to me without JavaScript, except for some small parts of the navigation. That might be an additional point.

Depends. AFAIR there are at least some german laws that are active because the provider of the service is sitting in germany, independent of where the servers are. Maybe it'll be a national question.

In general I can't disagree. If it makes sense, use it. What always struck me as odd though is the heavy focus on application code deployment. I mostly work on larger projects, so application updates are usually simply a pull from the repos

I agree that perl is not a compiler, but an interpreter. I disagree however if you say it doesn't perform compilation of the source.

No, there isn't. There is the source, and there is the prepared and executed optree. The building of this is in Perl called the compile time phase. Which makes sense to me. I can't see how the source file and the parsed optree can be the sa

I'm sorry if I was unclear, but I still don't see any problem with this being called a compilation of one format into another.

How is the transformation into bytecode before execution not a translation? Yes, the bytecode format is perl-specific, but you can't easily get at the real original source code again.

And even if it's seen in Perl land, in most cases it is called with a code reference as argument, not a label, which simply replaces the current item on the calling stack with the code reference. This allows for manual tail-call-optimisatio
