As much as I miss Newgrounds and grew up with Flash games, and used Flash for lots of art projects, it needed to go. The list of high score CVEs for Flash is 74 with a CVE score of 9 or higher. A decent number were exploits that made use of

There was a time when there were options and they died out because they weren’t as popular. VBScript and JScript to name a couple. Java is still around but I haven’t seen an applet in probably over a decade. Flash was a thing.

That’s a bit of a rosy take of the web of the 90’s-00’s. Plenty of sites failed to render without JS, they just had a noscript tag that said “this site requires JavaScript”. Graceful degradation was ideal but often too much for sites that e

Do you have any good recommendations for designing the design system? I’m currently in a position where our designs don’t always “fit” the spec that in theory exists. I’d like to get us on tailwind but widths and paddings and margins at tim

Petition to change all languages with “+” to repeat the last character for each plus. Going down the list of languages on Wikipedia[0] A+ becomes AA C++ = CCC Clik++ never mind this was a bad call. JJJ RRR Visual JJJ XXX (nice) xBaseee ZZZ

Same, I mostly came to HN through search results or links out of Reddit. Once Apollo shut down I pretty much was done - I only ever used Alien Blue and when it got bought, I was off Reddit until Apollo came along. HN is where I’ll be for my

Oh for sure, just a hypothetical lol. And idk maybe you write software or something that you want to keep as free as you can, so ads make it doable to sustain that. There’s any number of valid reasons to advertise, and if it’s a site for co

I’m a Reddit expat, the only app that made it usable is dead now so here I am. I know I won’t find talk on Dead Cells tips or Rocket League coaching, but at least there’s lots of good tech discussion and occasional political shitposting tha

That’s incredibly reductive and shows you maybe don’t spend time in these spaces based on your perceptions? Many of my friends are talented makers who use social media to communicate about what they do with friends and fans. I’ve learned a

I get this metric but at what point is the cutoff? If a small home run website has good info and gets popular, and has to add more advertisements, do they then get deranked on the search engine that led people there?

I have a knee-jerk reaction to sites that reveal things or animate as I scroll down. It was cool the first time or two…years ago. Now it feels gimmicky at best, and more often it obscures the page in a way that makes me feel like I need to

There’s an example of that in the linked write up - a user reported really enjoying colorful, full-page images…on the first use. After subsequent use, the failures of the UX made such aesthetics more annoying than useful

There’s plenty of UIs that I would like to be able to either reorganize or remove parts of. Arc Browser has Boosts which do allow for a decent amount of customization which is much appreciated.

I recently learned about electrical utilities in the US - the only way they really make profit is through building new infrastructure (power prices are set by a control board). There’s zero motivation for them to do maintenance, which is ho
