I'm not a meaningful Instagram user nor would I defend it as "good", but from a "success" perspective, for my demographic (I'm a 30-something US resident), it is clearly the most relevant social network.

Fwiw, at a hackathon at my company, some of my coworkers _did_ build a stack overflow clone in a weekend (and they did a very impressive job of it). But yes, it lacks polish, and is now largely unused.

I think you misspoke? No company in history has ever raise $100b in a year, but that’s about what SpaceX is valued at now.

This is a major (but common) misunderstanding of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). CBDCs are actually more centralized money than has ever been conceived of before, and therefore are especially not a good fit for blockchain.

Key-value pretty trivially fits into the relationship model if need be. But yeah, if you’re very sure of the key-valueness of your data, something like RocksDB could be a more direct fit. It’s just a little harder to work with in my experie

This isn’t strictly correct: there were fake reactions in a video he released, but he was not aware they were fake until later, and they were removed.

I agree that ghosting should be defined as actively not responding to someone who is trying to get in touch with you. But I would suggest that if someone is forcing the issue and asking to meet again, it’s better to respond with a polite ve

It’s just something you have to avoid. It’s not hard to avoid though, unless you are doing bizarre and non idiomatic things with Optional. I have never actually seen a NullPointerException resulting from a null Optional, in my code or my co

I tried to be intentionally conservative, but I agree there’s an argument for it to be higher. As someone who watches markets a decent amount, 3% seems far more likely to be in clear reaction to some event, or a continuation of a recent maj

This comment (and Animats's parent comment) shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how a balance sheet works. Balance sheets balance: the funds are an asset, but there is a symmetrical liability due back to the customer.

Rule of thumb: if an equity market move is ever less than 1.5% in either direction, the headlines about why it happened are completely made up. Financial news has to assign a narrative even when there is none.

100k per seat annually? Just to be clear, you’re saying that said software would cost roughly $100k/year/user? Is there any pure software product in the world priced that aggressively?

As someone who works in finance and sees the messiness, my takeaway is the exact opposite: the bad tech is evidence that the maintenance of the monetary system is largely not a tech concern, it’s an institutional and societal trust concern.
