Yes ISPs are lobbying hard for a tax like this in Europe (not for fees between businesses, they want the government to collect it for them): https://www.euractiv.com/section/digital/news/commission-to-...

One addition on receiver side amplification: it is done all the time. Each piece of equipment has a noise floor that can be higher than the one in the signal (think weak signals but with a good SNR). A low noise amplifier at the receiver ca

Oh I didn’t know it was kind of a workaround. I do like the fact that loop is not a function though but an expression like if or case. FWIW I think in Clojure you can use “recur” inside functions too to specifically indicate tail call recur

Clojure’s loop expression hits this spot for me. It sets a recursion point to which you can jump using any logic inside the body you want, as long as it is from tail position. It’s like a while loop turned into an expression. I haven’t enco

An example that really stuck with me is that you can draw an arrow on a blank piece of paper and measure its length and direction without needing to define an x/y coordinate system on the paper. There is something there (the manifold a

Async generators similarly open up different ways to program complex / multi step user interactions. Instead of creating “state machine” objects that mutate on every input, you can have async functions aka coroutines that iterate over

It doesn’t measure packet loss, but since there is one tiny request in flight at a time, it ends up in a single IP packet with packet loss being visible as retransmissions / outliers taking multiples of your average round trip time.

Finding the right abstraction isn’t easy in a network stack. TCP’s is less useful for application logic but it reflects the way the protocol works internally. Bunch of Bytes goes in on one side, Bytes stream out on the other side in chunks

Not trying to argue for the feasibility of space based solar power, but the inverse square law applies in the far field i.e. when the emitter can be approximated as a point source. Depending on the wavelength and the antenna size this is no

The main issue in the article are calls to getaddrinfo() on every send which create a delay, which is not only DNS related. The function does DNS lookups but also translates IP address strings to address data that can be used by the kernel

TCP can survive those interruptions on its own, unless the application sets short timeouts or the IP address changes. MPTCP keeps working when either side of the connection changes addresses.

While a TCP socket needs to be created with specific flags to enable multipath, there is a tool that wraps existing applications and “upgrades” the socket calls on the fly: https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/jammy

And it’s not only the city-city times being better. I’d happily spend 1-2 hours more on a train ride because I’ll have a more comfortable seat and I’ll be able to read/work/sleep/… more or less uninterrupted the whole time. E

It could also be a very real consequence of feeling that you can’t or shouldn’t change the state and are therefore not responsible for it. The article doesn’t mention consumerism as a cause but I feel like it plays a role when people are mo

I checked the German rates recently and I wish that were still true. The ticket for going between Dusseldorf and Cologne train stations with intercity or regional trains is 175 GBP (146 if you book for the whole year). The one for regional

It’s bad right now. In August only 57% of German long distance trains arrived less than 6 minutes behind schedule. 23% had more than 16 minutes delay. IIRC that’s not even counting canceled stops.

AFAICT it really is different in Germany. The constitutional court can also be called by other courts, by the government or by parliament to check already passed laws.

The process makes sense from a separation of powers perspective. When there’s an especially fine line between what legislative wants and (constitutional) judicative allows, there has to be some rejections. This is probably one of the cases

Maybe you don’t need to completely mitigate those vibrations and they’re just a part of moving through life as a human. A very related image that stuck with me is “run on the engine, not the pistons”.

I guess the second claim is referring to the fact that the square root of 2 is an irrational number, so it can’t be expressed as a ratio of integers anyway.

I definitely used to think TCP was more “high-level” than it actually is. Yes it does much more than UDP but still, its job is to get a sequence of bytes from A to B. You can tune it for higher throughput or more sensitive flow control but
