Yes, such bans only last a few days.

Someone wrote an abusive distributed crawler that got a lot of Tor IP addresses banned.

Probably because we restrict their crawlers. But this is an excellent side effect, because the last thing I want is traffic from Google searches.

That's true. Companies, and startups in particular, have increasingly realized that they want really good programmers.

It is about what it was before the spike that preceded the crash though.

No one is claiming there is a shortage of programmers. The shortage is of really good programmers. These tend to be people who have an innate love of and aptitude for programming. It's orthogonal whether they happen to major in CS in col

"Yet, there is no enduring formula for creativity and rebellion." This is a fine sounding statement, but it's false. We've been accumulating and refining techniques for having new ideas for centuries, at least. Leonardo da Vinci mentioned

A valuation cap is merely an upper bound on a valuation. I'd rather be conservative and wait till there is a valuation.

The difference between me and the other partners is mostly that I got to be publicly known by writing. On most topics there are other partners who can give better advice than me. PB gives better advice about hacking. Geoff gives better ad

That's an estimate of what will happen eventually in the biggest companies, based on industry norms. But we don't know how much we've been diluted so far in individual companies.

If this were a startup that was trying to grow as fast as possible, it would be a good idea to own the domain. It would make the site easier to find. But we're not trying to grow, so we don't want to make HN easier to find.

That is interesting. The reason it hasn't changed is convertible notes. Now most of the fundraising immediately after Demo Day is on notes. Since a note doesn't establish a valuation, we add zero to the total valuation for those companie

The total valuation of those 511 is currently about $11.5 billion. We ourselves don't know the percentage owned by founders. But considering that investors continually complain that YC companies are overpriced, it may be higher than the in

I can't say for sure this never happens, but I've never seen an instance of it. A startup is composed of its people. For an acquiring company to take on people they didn't want would be the ultimate sacrifice.

This would be accurate if time were going backwards. The world it describes is how things were in the 90s. For the last two decades, at least, the power of hackers/makers relative to MBAs/smooth talkers has consistently increased, and that
