That's a very Kate Courteau picture incidentally. She's our architect, and is the reason YC looks so distinctive. It's hard to get simple right, but she does.

It's so true. I can do routine work with noise, but not the kind that requires insight. The sad thing is that noise is yet another example of the phenomenon of "the tragedy of the commons." Which means things tend to get no

This is a subtle example of the advantages of the Internet. When people made things like this in 1980, you'd never even hear about it.

If the author wanted to be fair, the title should be "Why Silicon Valley funds SpaceXes and Teslas, and not Hyperloops." And then it would be clear that the answer is simply that Elon is working on SpaceX and Tesla, and not on th

That seems a bit of a stretch. Hackers & Painters wasn't a book about startups. It was a collection of essays about topics related to computers. One of them ("How to Make Wealth") happened to be an analysis of the ec

Thanks for the kind words, but I think you may be attributing ideas to "How to Make Wealth" that you picked up elsewhere at about the same time. Perhaps from your peers building Facebook clones. The whole point of that essay is

If you mean companies we've funded, you can reach them by emailing them individually or by coming to Demo Day. Unfortunately the next Demo Day (on tuesday) is already full. But there will be another in March.

The title of this article may unintentionally embody a point about 20% time, because GMail and AdSense have something else in common that Occam's razor implies was more important than Google policies: http://en.wikipedia.org

Swiftype was one of the sleepers. They'd been growing really fast but were known mostly to their users rather than to the people who talk about startups. There are quite a few of these.

This is an interesting case of a disadvantage becoming an advantage. The CEO suffers from significant hearing loss, but that enabled him to see a huge market that most 20-something founders overlook.

You seem to be misunderstanding him. Perhaps deliberately. But I will clarify this for you anyway. You don't have to do these things simultaneously. You start out with a handful of people, and reach profitability making something sm

Wow is this list good. It has the kind of resonance you only get when you're writing from a lot of hard experience. As I just wrote when I sent this link to the current YC batch, if you see advice here that puzzles you, it may be a si

That is exactly right. I'm trying to get a complete guide to fundraising done in time for Demo Day, so I don't have to repeat all this stuff verbally (and incompletely) yet again. There is at least one more coming on fundraising

I've often wondered about this. As some commenters have pointed out, we don't work quite as hard as people used to have to. But we still work a lot. I suspect the short answer is healthcare costs. I was an expert in the earn-l
