Hypercore distributes signed log-based structures addressed by pubkey. It embeds indexes in each log entry to make this perform well; for instance Hyperbee is a b-tree over a log. (See https://github.com/hypercore-protocol&#

It’s not all one or another. PLs are a software product and they need proper marketing and PMF. You can describe the network effect as political but its the same kind of politics as getting your friends to change chat apps.

That’s the trouble with the lead-poisoning theory, it’s one of those things where you can describe all the issues as the net result of poison. The rise of the church always interests me in this story. As I understand it, Christianity was a

Somehow I'm replying to you twice, but this time I agree and wanted to note that libraries are curated spaces as well.

I'm not 100% convinced by your assertion that censorship only favors the rich and powerful. It can and often does, but it can also help people without power or society and large. For instance, taking down a dox for a niche YouTuber is

I’m still consistently impressed with the work Maf and Andrew are doing on Hypercore. The next major release will include multiwriter and has some nice networking-layer improvements, and I really like how they’ve implemented the updates. Do

It doesn’t take a lot of distance from the moment to recognize this is the era of grappling with the meaning of the Internet. Eugene Wei had an interesting framing of this: he asked whether China’s great firewall was an indicator that they

Dependencies make this such an interesting challenge. What do you do when a library that’s upstream of 1000 packages with 1000 different authors… goes “rogue?” The friction of forking increases with each downstream you have to coordinate

I shouldn’t have used the term “contract” there because I was thinking more about interpersonal obligation than legal obligation.

I can’t comment on the legal issues but AFAIK you can change licenses with future releases, not retroactively, so while you might be right, software requires support and losing future releases is often close to losing the software entirely.

Really seems like you need to respect the author’s wishes here, but the tension between author and community can get complicated with FOSS. Open source is a contract with your audience that the code can be used freely. Authors gain their au

FWIW Casey Newton posted a writeup- they ran trials for a couple years and the response was polarized (some loved it, some hated it) and they couldn’t find any clear indicator that it was healthier for people.

I think you’re completely right and one way to counteract it is to bake in “non work” or “idle work” time regularly. This doesn’t have to be a vacation, but it does mean staying out of flow and reflecting on the project as a whole. This can

To be clear, this paper is referring to non-decentralized (highly-consistent I assume) consensus algorithms where the goal is to operate a cluster of machines as one logical system. You use this, for instance, to maintain high uptime in the

This is sadly true, but service workers are themselves hard to get right, and they tend to create subtle cache issues that are hard to notice until the deployment after their deployment to production.

Fwiw the US really botched the lockdown strategy through lack of coordination. Lockdowns don’t appear to be feasible for longer than a month; people begin to break the rules and reduce its efficacy, plus the economic damage starts to oversh
