Any unspecified conceptual problem of the type “choose a number” has this issue.

Oh, these kind of problems happen time and again in real-life maths: you use a lemma until someone points out that you are assuming something which may not take place (like connectedness of the domain, here).

Well, error analysis is one of the most abstruse areas of mathematics.

Sorry but the self-correcting nature of science is similar to the “all bugs are shallow”. People have done lots of harm (burning money is doing harm) with crap science. That is totally wrong and harmful. What may happen later is not a solut

Indeed. And they did bot use it in their daily speech, which is what makes a language “alive”. As I said in another comment, I can talk the language of schemes. It does not make that langauge any more “alive” as a tongue than Latin.

The article presents latins as a “live” language. That is a fallacy. A live language is one passed from “mother” to child. It is always a “first” language. The fact that Newton, Leibnitz etc used it did not make it a true “live” language. T

If your windows desktop is “shared” between computers in a domain, and the computer you are logging in is old, you are doomed.

My bad!!!!! I wanted to say Gauss-Seidel but got totally confused. What a mess I have done. Sorry.

I never said I was against using it. Just calling it “green” (no ‘er’) is simply false, misleading and against what they have been calling it for years. I am all for nuclear and greener energy. I am totally against doublespeak.

Oh, no, it started in the seventies, around that. It is a mixture of "look what happens if we let everybody have nuclear power: now Pakistan and India have it, and there is a great chance of a nuclear conflict" (simplifying). And

OH MY! I intended to say Gauss-Seidel and said Gauss-Jordan! What a mess I have created. Sorry to all for the confusion. Of course, Gauss' reduction method is key to understanding systems/linear maps. Gauss/Seidel is totally

The very notions of continuity and extrema allow you to, for instance, tell if a mechanism is in general position or in a special case.

Right, in this case you are totally right. In my school however, it is explained for general-size systems. With this I do have issues. Thanks for your feedback.

No: the person who implements the method is certainly working alongside (or has handy) a say, mathematician/physicist/specialist in numeric computation. I would not ask "just an Engineer" (no offense) to understand how

Yes, of course, but those are not specific algorithms (except possibly the Gauss reduction method which deserves a special treatment because it is not "just a method of computing" but "a way of understanding" by itself

Yes, that is exactly my issue. It is unlikely you are going to use the Gauss-Jordan method (if you find a linear problem of huge size, you are just going to plug it into Matlab or whatever) and it does really not give you any information

Honest question (am a prof. of Maths for engineering at a Spanish Univ. and am wondering about this a lot): What is the point of explaining, say the QR factorization or iterative methods like Gauss-Jordan to engineers ? I think of them as

It is indeed less efficient despite there being people who seem to be very fast. What they write takes much less with a true keyboard.
