I use mumble for a lot of informal communication stuff, I installed a server on a $5 digital ocean droplet, and it works quite well.

This looks pretty neat, although I'm leery of the react.js dependencies as I don't do a lot of react development. I'm sure I could wrap it up or something if needs be. There's a lot to be said for this new move in third-

My understanding of the situation (which I'm not involved with since I'm no longer Berkeley faculty, but I follow because I was in the past) is that the office of the president (UC-wide, not just UCB) ordered the systems installed

According to an earlier article [0] about this, there's enough storage to keep 30 days of network traffic. That's not nothing. It's also something that apparently the regular UC IT folks have no control over whatsoever. 0: h

I write a fair bit of Apex for salesforce. I can't say I enjoy it, but it is the only game in town. My org uses salesforce for a lot of day to day stuff, and there is a lot you can do with users on cheap licenses if you're willing

Yup. When I was researching front-end / back-end stuff three years ago for the project I'm still working on, meteor was on the list. It's neat for sure, but I didn't want to be stuck with mongo as a forever thing. I ende

Weird. I don't get that on my system. Memory usage (according to top) is somewhere around 200 - 300 MB, cpu usage runs somewhere around 25% of a single core (on an i7). The only time I get real lag on my system is when I'm opening

I don't doubt that demand exceeds supply. San Francisco also is not really a representative sample of US (or global) home ownership vs rental and so on. All that aside, I don't really see the line of argument that links my propose

I have bought a house. I think one reason it's so painful is that it is a relatively rare occurrence which usually represents a huge transfer of wealth. If, on the other hand, home sales were more common and (presumably) for less money

I'm not sure about Oakland's geology, but the part of SF where I live (outer sunset) is more or less just houses on top of sand dunes. I'm no geologist, but I've always wondered how well one could build tall buildings on

I have not found that to be the case. I run my code through gulp-babel and done. There is no runtime AFAIK, although there was one for traceur. I have also had no real problems interopping with other big libraries. I think the biggest point

Yah, I had thought about inheritance and super, but without multiple inheritance, it'd be tricky. Basically a lot of my routes do stuff like parameter validation (I store specific criteria on the model class, but apply them in the rout

Some other minor things: promises are rad, and I know I can just use Bluebird's promisifyAll to wrap your code. But still, it would be nice if I didn't have to muck around with that and async methods called without a callback retu

I have some similar frustrations with Asana. The UX leaves a fair bit to be desired, especially when it comes to organizing bigger stuff into projects, subtasks, and so on. The android app isn't very great. That said, we use Asana at m

For a kind of boring CRUD application you've got two major framwork issues: server and ORM. Node has a pretty vibrant bunch of app server libraries to choose from, ranging from simple but broadly-used (express) to highly-optimized and

Yes, my particular comment was that I don't have a choice to turn around and leave if I'm denied a pat-down whilst opting out on the return leg of my flight. It was a kind of sarcastic response to my comment parent. Sarcasm doesn&

Fraying on the charger (dc-carrying) cable is definitely an issue, but my biggest gripe about these chargers is the form factor of the AC-carrying part of the power cord. I can't speak to non-US chargers, but the three-prong cord that
