A (somewhat blunt) rule of thumb, not just for you, but for anyone in this endeavor: In the future, if you are making a graph like this, and the differences are so small that they don't show up when your y-axis starts at 0, they probably ar

When you don't start your y-axis at 0, you skew the interpretation of your data. At best, this is a significant mistake, and at worst, this is intentionally misleading. Take this graph: http://i.imgur.com/bBzCK.png It looks like women are

I haven't played bughouse in over a decade, so I've got to ask: what's with the openings in this video? Is bughouse strategy so different that there's a whole new opening book, are there some openings I'm completely ignorant of, or am I jus

A company already makes these at http://www.theipadframe.com/ . My wife got me one for Valentine's Day; we keep it in the living room to charge the iPad when we're not using it on the couch. I love it; it's a nice way to give the iPad a h

Teaching is a skill, just like anything else in this world. You can be a natural at it or have no innate talent at it, but if you want to get better, you will. The teachers everyone remembers are experts both at their subject and at teachin

Definitely. In my experience, it gets a lot worse when you start re-assigning variables ("But x = 3, you can't say it equals 5"), and worse again when you have to start using == and = concurrently. And then weak typing vs. strong typing vs.

I teach computer programming to beginners for a living, and I love the idea of a prose-like book aimed to be accessible to them. However, it's much, much harder than it sounds. You do an excellent job of addressing the programming concepts

One of the things the article doesn't point out (but the linked case law does) that I was curious enough about to look into: The "beeper" was essentially a short-ranged RF transponder used as a tracking device. The officers were actively fo

This article is a little hyperbolic. First, the item in question was Overt Act #28 out of 103. Case law is not going to rest entirely on this French Sopranos episode. Even then, overlaying a copyrighted work with translated subtitles isn't

7 glasses of wine in two hours is just under one full bottle of wine an hour. That's a significant amount of wine. edit: What I'm trying (probably poorly) to get at is that almost anyone who kills a bottle of wine in an hour knows that they

I think the fact that they do a week devoted to reducing technical debt is just as awesome as the WOW week (and giving the innovation time right after code improvement is probably the best way to do things.) I'd be concerned, though, that h

This is an outstanding value-add for iPads. There are a ton of school administrators/school boards out there that love to try new technology in the classroom. They've been chomping at the bit to buy iPads for a while now, just waiting for t

This is interesting, but looking at the NYC one, your "Xpert Tweeters" really distort the idea of "local". I'm seeing tons of national news from the WSJ, the NBA, and a score of other media outlets that are based in New York but not coverin

Aside from the humor of this, Fark probably has the best annotated bibliography of links to check out. A number of other sites have more links, but Fark's are actually curated and more worthwhile overall.

Apple's goal with iCloud and Air* is not to compete with Dropbox. iCloud, in general, seems poised so that no matter what device it originated on, you can find your data. Take a look at PhotoStream. Yes, you can't delete individual files, a

Definitely understandable. To me, "Oh Hai" comes across as unprofessional, not laid back (which is what I assume you're going for.) The "Hi; I'm Tim." seems to work a lot better in that regard.

These aren't just school policies, they're usually state laws. Education policy is a huge political topic, and one that the general public often feel qualified to provide input on, regardless of their actual expertise. That said, why should
