I prefer to use separate docker containers for that, with some trivial shell wrappers to make creating new persistent "browser profiles" easy. But for non-techies, I guess the Firefox addon is the next best thing.

A lot of tech media outlets are not much more than extension of tech companies' PR departments. This has been very obvious especially in videogame "journalism" for a while (refusal to cover negative stories and more important

Ding ding ding, that is the correct endgame the governments want. And it would have been achieved a long time ago if the FOSS movement did not appear. Unfortunately, all it did was postpone the inevitable, because most people prefer comfort

I've seen theories about Saudis paying for this in order to prevent the next Arab Spring, in which Twitter played a key role for the protesters to organize themselves. Seems a bit far-fetched, but these days, who knows?

Nonsense. As with any and all "social media", block early, block often. It's your time, your attention, so you should get to choose what you see. Of course, you run the risk of enclosing yourself into an echo chamber, but tha

Apparently, (at least some) content creators like it better than Mastodon already. See https://drewdevault.com/2023/06/30/Social-and-parasocial-med...

Arguably, Mastodon does not even want that shot. They've been perfectly happy even without last year's big influx of ex-twits.

Matrix tries to solve this with matrix.to ( https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix.to ), which will eventually hopefully segue into a separate matrix:// protocol in URIs.

While RSS is, as you say, quite messy, Atom has also brought lots of headaches to this poor feed aggregator developer over the years. Its specification is a lot tighter than RSS', but there is still enough wiggle room for feed generato

FWIW, there are some - maybe one or two - alternate implementations of Mastodon server brewing out there. Not of a generic ActivePub server, but specifically a server with an intention to be fully compatible with Mastodon. So in the future,
