It was the other way around: that connector started as a game port that was then retrofitted as a MIDI port. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_port

Thank you, I had missed that part. It would be great indeed if there is a standardized boot process that every OS can use, I think it would greatly help with RISC-V adoption.

But those initiatives are focused on servers. What about desktops and laptops? Cellphones? SBC like the Raspberry Pi? That is my concern.

After playing around with some ARM hardware I have to say that I don't care whether ARM is more efficient or not as long as the boot process remains the clusterfuck that it is today. IMHO the major win of the IBM PC platform is that it

Sega was quite crazy too. From the top of my head: * The Megadrive plus MegaCD plus 32X, affectionately called "The Tower of Power". I have one and it is quite a hefty beast. * Sonic & Knuckles with its lock-on technology that

I have that situation with anime. Yeah, I know that there are loads of awesome anime, but most anime fans are a bit... intense.

We do have those funny coloured "licorices" in Spain, but anybody with have a brain knows that the real one is black, and the others just happen to share the same shape xD Having said that, my favourite is that salty stuff you guy

How do you get a PostgreSQL database to grow to one petabyte? The maximum table size is 32 TB o_O

At least it wasn't megabytes... Spoiler: "megabytes" are abbreviated as MB, but many people don't see to remember that SI units are case-sensitive.

Which well-defined interface? Most Unix tools communicate through text pipes, and provide their result in whatever random format the author likes that then requires significant effort to parse correctly.

My dad was a big fan of Trinitrons. Both our first TV bought in the mid '80s, and the second one bought in the early 2000s after the first one died, were Trinitrons, as was our 17” PC monitor. Last year I got bitten by the retrogaming

I wonder how well that will work given the differences in grammar and word order. I have seen a similar solution applied between English and Japanese, which has a similar grammar to Korean, and the results were... not impressive.

Geometry shaders have been replaced by mesh shaders, which are way more powerful as they can output any kind of geometry.

I remembered that I borrowed the collection from my uncle and he still has it. I will ask him for pictures of the box, maybe it was the "updated" editions.

More natural why? Paper doesn't (usually) have rounded corners and it looks pretty natural to me.

But a cell phone, maybe. For a laptop, we are talking about a couple of millimetres on each side max , it is not a big deal.

No, it's because Japan is a deeply conservative country, really adverse to change, because change means taking risks. If you ever had to deal with Japanese you would know, layers upon layers of convoluted procedures for no real reason.

I have been paying Spotify for 5 or 6 years now, and while I love how much amazing music it has helped me to discover, the UI is absolutely atrocious. The way it puts together artists, albums, individual songs and playlists in the same list

DVDs support progressive scan and most movies were encoded in 480p; the player then just sent half the picture on one field and the other half on the other field. Your point still stand though, these modern 4k editions are far higher qualit

Am I the only one who finds screens with rounded corners and notches really stupid? We had to struggle for decades with CRTs and their funky geometry, and when we finally get displays with perfect geometry, we botch them again to make them

I didn't mention Itanic, nobody cares about it. The x86-64 might have been published in 1999, but the first real products arrived in 2003.

By the same token, the 8086 is not the same as x86-64 from 2003 ;)

Technically yes, but I don't see the average person getting one. Much like the Raptor Talos, it is a very niche product.

1) Shrinking compared to what? The moment you want to do any serious work or gaming, you need a desktop (or a laptop, but a real PC in any case). 2) Ok, so there is expensive workstation available. It is a step forward I guess. 3) Call me w
