It's not clear what the author means here. This is not a very mathematical article. (Nit: d is a distribution so it can not always return 0 -- it has to sum to 1. But your point stands.)

Reran the std::sort vs. qsort benchmark: Visual Studio 2015: 1.79x WSL gcc 6.2: 1.92x WSL clang 3.8.0: 2.08x Ubuntu 16.10 VM gcc 6.2: 1.68x Ubuntu 16.10 VM clang 3.8.1: 1.89x All in favor of std::sort.

std::sort was about twice as fast (!!) last time I ran my benchmark. I don't think std::sort would be slower than a macro based liberty. Obviously, you can reserve memory in a vector in the beginning. > If an algorithm is time-crit

I suppose that you could just use C with std::vector and std::unique_ptr from C++, and you’d be much better off. The you could still write "C" code but not worry about memory leaks. Of course, you also need std::sort because it is

Some numerically unstable problem require a lot of precision of solve successfully. Similarily, well-behaved problems can be solve with 32-bit floats, but many require 64-bit floats.

Tao follows this advice well himself. He seems to be working on the millennium problem of Navier-Stokes, but works on many other things simultaneously and published partial results.

Latex typography looks vastly better than Word or LibreOffice, even when the font, margins and size are fixed.

Nice visualization! You should add L-BFGS, in my experience a very efficient and versatile algorithm. It is a jewel of optimization.

Because it is much easier than performing complicated modifications while the site is running. For example, at Google "down for maintenance" is not on the table. That can in some cases lead to lots of extra work or time, e.g. dual

One common mistake is to take the average of run times (for identical runs). I think taking the minimum should be better under reasonable assumptions. Edit: I now see that this was mentioned elsewhere here. Good!

Completely agree. The first issue in the report is about reading lines from a file. Those kinds of bugs can and should be eliminated for good.

If this holds up I am prepared to believe in almost anything – like the universe being a simulation and this is a deterministic round-off error. Conservation of momentum is pretty fundamental.

Compiling C++ is usually pretty slow. Go and C would be significantly faster.

I suppose Octave's niche is people who have been using Matlab, change employer, and no longer have access. Python + numpy + matplotlib + jupyter notebooks are superior to Matlab, IMO. And I used to be really into Matlab.

I have a Phd in optimization and I still think Cplex and Gurobi seem magical. The devil is in the details. Open source solvers are comparatively not very good.

Agreed that it seems magical. This is one of the areas where the open-source tools are way behind commercial solvers. Cplex and Gurobi are really impressive pieces of software.

The monospace font looks interesting. Fixed-width serif fonts are not that common. But creating fonts for Go? That sounds like a solution in search of a problem.

I answered no to essentially all questions. I consider dogs and rabbits, for example, to be intelligent life. From observing the earth and our surroundings, there is no reason to assume that higher intelligence would automatically arise. Ho
