It's always nice when you want to make a comment and it's already the top one. Happens a lot on HN. Indeed, some of these are possible to falsify with experiments. For example: > 14. A good type system is worth its weight plus

It's pretty interesting that YouTube offers such a huge surface area for processing user-uploaded files. Some of those obscure formats should have a security flaw. But the ffmpeg processes are surely sandboxed with seccomp or similar,

A version of Google for power users would be so nice. I'm sure the changes in search over the last decades helped the majority of users, but sometimes a "Google for developers" would have been nice.

I have worked several years at FAANG, and error like this were very hard to make due to how the frameworks were written. But it seems that this was third-party code, which I guess explains it.

Why did you turn it on? For testing?

This is great! This function belongs in the standard library.

You can use this for integration testing. If you have enough memory, you can then run several tests in parallel. Or, of course, if you need to do something with headless chrome while serving a request.

This can be done much faster. The problem is memory/disk bound. Decoding the PNGs should be most of the work if written properly. Edit: Yes, this is more reasonable: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25405595

How on Earth did this endpoint pass code review at Facebook? The person who wrote it probably was working under the assumption that the calling user was logged in, but still....

Yes! We're building a fairly complex web app and page refreshes are < 100ms. With prefetching on hover this becomes virtually instantaneous.

I made my own some time ago: https://www.strandmark.net/prediction.html On that page, I seem to mention that the original was "The Mindreader Applet." Don't know if that's true, but since it is/was

I tried OBS studio, but could not figure out how to use it properly. Ended up using Xsplit Vcam instead, which is really good. I think I managed to remove the background in a really, really crud way with OBS studio. Like using a chroma key

Poetry is good, probably the best for Python, but it is not without issues: - 1.1 is not compatible with envs created with earlier versions. - The parallel installer in 1.1 is enabled by default but has race conditions and must be disabled.

I did the same! Honestly don't remember how I figured all that stuff out without internet and stack overflow. Also, my friends would call me and ask for the secret code to start Doom. I'd begin: "cd doom2"....

I thought XPath was terrible beyond 1.0? E.g. https://tomforb.es/xcat-1.0-released-or-xpath-injection-issu... But it does not seem to be mentioned as an argument.

> Examples of people being nice to each other in FLOSS projects is certainly something we could always use more of, sure. Is that what this is? Yes. That's how I interpreted it, at least. (I think it's great)

It is useful to have the sum and product of empty lists be 0 and 1, respectively. This means that sum(A ++ B) = sum(A) + sum(B). (++ is concatenation)

It seems to me that both Google and Microsoft would benefit a lot if all Android applications were available on Windows. So I would not be surprised if they were wording on it.
